Crisco

Crisco and other food oils will eventually go rancid on you. Aside from the smell, it may actually harm you if you use the knife for food preparation.

Food oils can attract all manner of vermin, and while I don't know about bear attacks in Appalachia, but this may be an actual danger depending on what part of the world you may be in.

Mineral oil would be a better choice.
