criteria for your collection???

Recently there were a couple of threads like "how did you get started", "what Busse should I get first" etc. This made me wonder what criterias the HOG's and other veteran collectors have? I'd like to hear from you if you collect randomly, go after specific models or if you have other specific criterias???

I see all these awesome collections and I'm asking myself what the collectors, the people behind the collections were thinking!

i have about 15 busse knives currently.i like to collect ones that i would and do use.that means mostly coated blades.the satin finished busse's are so nice its hard for me to actually use them like you should.not to mention they are much more expensive than the coated blades.and i mostly stick to canvas micarta for the handles:thumbup:

I'm seeing a trend towards ~8 inch blades.

NMSFNO
DSSF
Team Gemini

Did sneak a SAR4 in there too.

Oh, and they're good bang for the buck.

Yep I like the bigger Busse blades 8" and up - I think this is where INFI really shines, IMHO, and differentiates itself from others.

Most of the smaller Busses are just too thick and heavy for my liking - the exception has been the Sus Scrofa, just because I love the blade shape and another exception will be the Muk, again due to a unique shape.

Right now I've kept:

BWM
BWM LE
CGFBM
NMSFNO
TMDSF
SARsqatch

And sold: CG ASH1, Skinny ASH, Tank Buster, SAR3, SAR4, AD and GW.

For me it has to be usable in a normal situation. Bushcraft, work, etc.

My snakeskin ak47 is the one exception. That one was just too pretty to let slip by.

I have collected knives that look cool and are functional. I have one collector blade - SFNO LE, otherwise they are users.

The Hell Razor with its design and CBT is what got me into it, followed by a DSF and CGFBM and competition finish Sarsquatch. After that I was hooked.

If i think i have a purpose for it i will bye it. Im a bit of a cold steel fan (save your berading i may have/like mall ninja toys but you can bet i know how to use them) but other than that i stick to my grandpas custom blades and some s&w and gerber.

I see a lot of really nice collections too. Some of the older hogs don't seem to be showing off their stuff like they used to. It's too bad cause there are some truly amazing collections lurking out there. I wouldn't consider myself a collector really. I started off randomly buying whatever struck my fancy. I am trying to modify that behavior and am buying, or collecting if you will, pretty much one color combo these days. I still have a few various model/color combo favorites around though. I don't make my selections by expected future value. I choose users. I don't purchase with the concern of "collector value" but understand it. IMHO the collector value "as far as money goes" is only good if you intend to sell it. My value comes from ownership and use. I have moved over to the satin and black paper variety. I use those satin blades and prefer them. I guess my goal is to have a set of knives that will cover all use ranges and have them all one color combo. Everyone has their own reasons. All too many times in this quest you will say "ok, thats it, I have what I need" only to see a new Busse model and salivate over it until you are back at it. Good luck!

I first started collecting Game Wardens, then LE's and then i got ahold of a SHSHII, then another and a SHBA and a SHMS and a Combat Recruit and then a couple of Original Satin Jacks and then and then and then, oh you get the picture.

I had to limit myself to black paper, . . . then this happened:eek:

I had to sell a few to get back to normalcy. :)

I used to have a Snakeskin criteria. I let most of those go. You can only fondle so much. At least for me.

My criteria now is "Hmmm, I might use this some day." ROTFL!! Seriously. Except for my GW collection, I look at every knife as a likely user. And as I pare down my collection, the likelihood of those users getting used goes up.

I just don't get to hack, slice or chop stuff much. Hoping the Muk will allow me a new INFI kitchen blade. I've been without for a long while.

This is pretty much how I approach collecting now. I keep what I feel I would enjoy using whether I actually use it or not. If a knife does not seem like a good user or I have more than one or two I sell it.

Criteria:

1) Do I like it?
2) Do I want it?

Happily the answer often is a resounding YES.

Criteria for me: Can I hide this one from the female? or What kind of excuse can I come up with to justify purchasing this one and will she believe it?:D:D Then, of course, no matter what she says, I end up buying it anyway because I figure if she kicks me out and I'm sleeping on the sidewalk, at least I will have my INFI to hold on to and so far my INFI doesn't talk back.

That is why you make sure all of your knives are the same color. Then the only rule to follow is only have 2 or 3 out at a time while she is around. That way, as far as she is concerned, you only have 2 or 3 knives. ;):p

(Seriously though, don't hide it from your wife, she will find out. I was only joking.)

Good thread. Here's my take...
  1. No swedge
  2. Strong tip
  3. Canvas or linen micarta.
  4. If it's Infi, uncoated
  5. If it's SR101, coated.

Random, like the rest of my life, completely and totally random. :o

Yeah, you can start out with specific intentions but that usually includes trying to be unique. I mean: all pumpkin or all this or that handle or blade color. I endorse that and it may make you very satisfied (that's all that matters) but it is not unique. There are always those with deeper pockets who will make you sad :(.

OTOH, as I have found, following your taste can be very rewarding. For example, I have a few I would use and some I definitely would not use, but I acquire what I LIKE to the extent that I can afford them. Keep in mind that this Busse stuff does not lose much of its value and may increase a bit. That is so incredibly offset by the joy that the workmanship/quality/design brings that it's a good place to park one's "discretionary income" as far as this mortal is concerned! Like art, high-end guitars, folders, race cars (all of which I've dabbled in), etc. That's for collectables and even for users. It's not an investment per se, but it's also not flushing your cash away either. You only live once... follow your impulses to the extent you can control them!
