CRK Flipper?

Flippers to me are stupid and serve no real purpose other than to take up space in your pocket, and prove to your friends you are truly a geek. If CRK had to poor taste to make one, I would not buy it.

I'll admit I was a little ways into the weekends festivities when I wrote my previous comment (should have posted in the "CRK posing with favourite beer" thread), so it is perhaps a little more disrespectful than I intended, however reading it with a clearer mind I stand behind the general sentiment. Certainly not all people who purchase flippers or make flippers are geeks, but I can't help but feeling like one when I use the one I have to open a box etc, especially at work or around friends. I don't buy the idea that deployment speed is going to save your life, and they cannot be relied upon to fully lock when using gloves, so in general Flippers are very cool to play with in front of the TV, but are mainly a gimmick that draws attention to your knife in all other situations (at least in my opinion).

I turn to CRK because at the heart of even the most dressed-up sebenza, there is a practical tool.

Of course if CRK made one I'd have to buy it regardless! :D ;)

I agree for the most part with kidcongo. I don't mind flippers myself. That said, I like knives such as CRK's because they don't draw attention to themselves like a flipper or auto tends to, kind of giving off that "strange ranger" vibe that scares the sheeple.

I often find that carrying both a folder and an auto works well, both to follow the "two is one and one is none" idea, and to have the folder when the auto wouldn't seem appropriate.

Finally, if Chris were to make a flipper (which will never happen) I might be inclined to give it a go. :)

I am surprised to hear that Chris has said no to slipjoints. I believe there is MUCH innovation still available in a non-traditional non-locking folding blade. Further, I think it could open his market up to a wider audience.

Personally, I would not mind having a knife like (similar but different) the insingo that lacked a lock. I completely understand that its no my choice to make, and I doubt anyone at CRK values my opoinon much, but there it is;)

Not all flippers have to be ugly and obtrusive (or take up pocket space). I'm not a flipper guy, but I'd love to see CRK make something like a front flipper.

For instance...

I agree that they do not all have to be ugly, but I think more than a few people view the idea of a flipper of any sort, in a similar light to an Emerson Wave, or a saw-tooth spine, or super thick blade stock, or recurves, or even gut-hooks. These are fine for a lot of people and some makers can execute them very nicely....I just have ZERO interest in seeing them or having one in my pocket.

IMO- being flashy with flippers and auto's could land up causing us to loose our rights to carry any knives(sort of defeats the I carry a knife , because it's a tool argument). Best not to cause waves. Many are freaked out by knives in general, no need to make it worse. Of the 2 auto's make the better sense in that they can be of great help to someone with any hand disability. As for speed of deployment, I don't think flippers are faster than most non-flippers or that there is any need to be fast.
I would have thought the flipper fad would have died by now, but it seems to be growing. Then there is much in the world these days I can't make sense of, so flippers should fit right in.

No respect even for makers like Ken Onion?

His knives must be only for geeks... :jerkit:

I like all knives. If CRK decided to make a flipper, I'm sure it would be incredibly built.

I respect most makers. That doesn't mean I have to like their knives. Then again, I have no respect for folks using the "jerkit" emoticon.

Yup, you said what I was thinking. Personally, I'd never buy a knife like the one shown above, regardless of maker.

I must have missed something....who said anything about respecting (or disrespecting) any makers?

I would suggest that many here have great respect for most if not all the innovators in the industry. I also think that Mr, Onion is know for a bit more than flippers.

Appologies if I missed something, in this thread somewhere....I really don't think anyone expressed any disprespect for a maker.

There are many extremely talented makers who are doing flippers. They should turn away from the dark side and come back into the light of non-flippers :)

Heck yeah! A flippered recurve blade assisted opening camouflaged deaths head laden "king of the mall ninjas" special with toxic green zombie killer inlays! :barf:

You're right, unit. I'm sure these respectful members would share their feelings directly with the knifemakers who specialize in making flipper-style knives.

No, they wouldn't. Because it's disrespectful.

I am sorry you feel that way. I would suggest that giants in the industry would be able to see the difference between a person slamming a feature on a knife and disrespect of the maker that is not defined by the one feature they are slamming.

I think people probalby have made statements to this effect to some of the giants in the industry....and the true giants shrug it off becasuse they realize that their work is not so trivial as to be defined by a single feature.

I like and respect a lot of creative people who make stupid things. Comedy movies, hot rods, choppers, etc.

Flippers fall in that same category for me. They are totally stupid, but cool to own, and it takes effort to make one. They are just not a serious tool built for real work. More a conversation starter than anything.

Come off it. If anyone said that about CRK you all would be up in arms

Save the sympathy, you have nothing to be sorry for

Except, say, the XM-18... built for first responders. Do you know anything about Hinderers history?

I've owned two Hinderers(and one of his Gerber designs) and have been a professional firefighter since 1993. Owning them didn't make the job any easier.

Not that anyone said that owning one would make your job easier, you are in the unique position to confirm for us, contrary to kidcongo's statement, are they are a serious tool built for real work?

Mine were non flippers lol! They're fine but I found the two I owned (not the Gerber one) disengaged far more easily than I preferred, truth be told. They were fine, overall. No better than CRKs for work, in my opinion, though.

"Except, say, the XM-18... built for first responders. Do you know anything about Hinderers history? "

He makes a very nice non flipper-own 2. I do know the firefighter/1st responder history and have seen the original, but can't remember if it was a flipper or non-flipper-thinking non-flipper, but could be wrong

That's my impression, too. I like all knives and respect the makers for putting their work out there.
The disparaging words are pretty pathetic, guys.

Carry on
