Crk flipper

Chris has already made a comment on the CRK forum that he'll never make a flipper.:thumbup:

I mean one could say that his knives are on the elegant side of the spectrum and choosing to add a flipper would be like putting oversize rims on a Cadillac escalade but at one time couldn't the same be said of the thumb stud? Id love to here his rational.

Chris basically feels it has no real value in the knife world. He has stated he doesnt agree with his knives being flipped open due to the stress it puts on the lockface. You cant tell your customers not to thumb flick your knives and then go putting a flipper on them to allow you to do that more easily. He has also eluded to the fact that if he feels if he cant advance a certain technology he wont do it just to do it. And he feels there are plenty of makers that know flippers more than he ever will and so he just wants to do his own thing. Some makers wont use bearings. Some wont experiment with steels when they get one they like. And even if chris's opinion of flippers has eased up he was pretty adamant about never doing one so it could just come down to him not wanting to be a hypocrite. IMHO some companies move to flippers to increase sales because they are hot right now. Chris just makes what he wants and he simply doesnt want to make them.

I wouldn't say that about thumb studs as they actually improve functionality. Flippers are just another way to open a knife one handed not an extravagant gimmick.

I do agree that they are on the elegant side of the spectrum but that doesnt diminish their capability to be a workhorse.

.... and has no trouble selling all he can make.

Exactly. And I think the quickest way for him to lose respect and be labeled a sell out would be for him to start making knives that he has expressed no interest in making. Some may argue he should make what his customers want to buy. But Chris Reeve Is to knives what Ferrari is to cars. He simply has different motivations. And I think it would be a sad day in the knife world if chris had to start making knives he didnt like or want to make just to stay a float. I admire him sticking to his principals. Not that I wouldnt buy a CRK with a flipper. But I dont think he is in any way obligated to make a flipper any more than he is obligated to make a balisong or an OTF. Its simply not what he does.

I will say that I started a very similar thread recently about knives of similar style/materials/construction that do offer flippers. I found some good options out there! Definitely not a shortage of ti handled frame locks with great construction and a flipper.

Good point!

Nice thing is, there are some really well-made custom flippers out there in the Sebenza price range. So there's no reason to feel deprived because Chris doesn't want to make a flipper.

Chinese fake Sebenza 25 has flipper. I must admit that copy is better looking that original... If someone want to see it, he can google it.

I don't think that's the solution we're looking for. I'd suggest folks google the Rod Olson Quick Flick instead, especially those who like the size of the Small Sebenza. :)

Yeah, I don't think fakes are ok to buy.

If someone want good quality flipper bigger than 3" - maybe ZT is solution.

ZT may not be high-enough quality for people who buy Sebenzas. But the Rod Olson piece sure is.

Why do some people dislike flippers? It ls a great innovation and doubles as a guard. Win win to me.

Flipper can be bad for stop pin wear because opening action is more dynamic than in typical manual folder. And it's ugly when knife is composed.

Bigger guard for what? You want to stab someone with knife on gunfight? :D

I have seen and handled numerous sebbie fakes. Never saw one with a flipper. And I cant find what you are talking about either. If you are talking about the little nub on the blade that sticks out that cant be used to open the knife effectively if at all. And I cant find anything that was made with an actual flipper.

Praise jeebus:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

It would be like Randal throwing out a model with a saw back, fuller, glass breaker, tanto, and in zombie green ceracote. Makes no sense with the companies image and purpose.
