CRK Magnacut

... he said that at Blade Show, 2021 (more than hinted at it). Tim indicated that having one steel would simplify metallurgical identification in their shops.

My words now ==> But much more importantly, Magnacut can be heat treated to be as tough as CPM 4V and Cruwear at similar hardnesses (so it is suitable for most fixed blade applications), whilst being very stainless, and being in the same league with M390 in abrasive edge wear. That's quite a performance triangle.

As popular as M390 currently is, based on lab and field results, Magnacut should be just as popular, given a few more years of real knife-world experience. Plus Larrin gave it a "name" and not a number. And... it's made in USA.

I wish I'd invented it!

Sidenote: I'm amazed how many of the big production manufacturers have already released a blade in Magnacut. The performance trend is clear.

It almost seems like it's described as the elusive magic steel combination of characteristics, tough to break, hard with good edge retention, and stainless. I snagged a small tanto blade Sebenza 31 in Magnacut and glass bead blasted Macassar ebony inlay a couple of weeks ago. The edge is quite sharp, but I have not tested the durability as I've only carried it twice.

Off-topic: The only difference it has from the special order that I placed online several weeks ago is (1) the single gold thumb stud vs the two silver thumb studs I ordered, and (2) Macasar Ebony instead of the natural micarta I ordered.
So I wonder if I called CRK with my order number if I can change my order to a large 31 or Inkosi in Magnacut, and with a different blade type, without losing my place in line?

halden.doerge halden.doerge I’ve been looking for a large crk in magnacut or the new backpacker. Haven’t seen any drops at dealers. Have I lost my touch or am I looking in the wrong places? 😂

I got mine incoming from the exchange here on BF. I just keep the CRK knives for sale forum set up to alert me by email every time something new is posted, and so I was able to jump in and claim it right when it went up, since I happened to be looking at my phone right then. 😁

Just received a small 31 box elder magna cut insingo from a seller here!
Excited to see how the steel performs as CRK seems to be heat treating these at the higher end of the desired heat treat compared to other manufacturers.
My knives do get used heavily so hopefully soon I'll have some input :)

I snagged a large insingo in Magnacut. Extremely sharp out of the box and will be my main blade for a while

I've carried my smal Seb. with an Insingo blade for two months now. My impressions so far is that it is easy to maintain just by stropping, keeps an edge very well and has a nice "bite" to whatever it cuts. I'm very impressed.

Thanks for that feedback. I've been wondering how the new steel would respond to stropping.

How would you say the toughness is as to how it responds with chipping or rolling?

They'll probably change your small to a large without losing your spot (I've done it all the way up until I get the email for payment) but with the Inkosi having a different lead time than the Sebenza, I'm sure about if you changed that. I know you weren't able to change old drop point orders to tanto or insingo orders after they came out but since your order is a more recent one that was made after they're already out you probably could. Only way to know for sure is to call.

Thats great! Im interested to try the stuff out. I was impressed with CRKs s45vn. I can edc my knife for like a month and it will still shave. It wont shave great but it'll still do it. Pretty impressive.
A tad bit old thread - but I'm trying to find a real tangible difference between say s45vn and Magnacut. In all the charts I look at the only 'real' difference is the corrosion resistance. And, s45vn is no slouch in that area. Magnacut may be a tiny bit 'tougher' as well, but that seems like it. The edge retention and ease of sharpening (which I think would be the two biggest factors for a pocket knife) are VERY similar. Am I misreading the charts/graphics on this one? There is soooo much buzz about this and the numbers don't line up.

Apart from stainlessness, the upgrade consists of increased toughness at higher hardness. That's why they can run magnacut at 64 ish. This contributes to better edge retention.

The charts I'm looking at say Magnacut has the same edge retention as S35VN

The source is from BladeHQ. Yes, it does say that - so it's a bit confusing. Just trying to figure out how much is hype vs. reality. If it's truly a magic steel and 'perfect' for pocket knives I'll wait on a few CRK purchases I'm considering. And if it IS the magic steel would it make CRK S45VN knives a black sheep on the secondary market?

I wouldn't take the Blade HQ sheets as gospel. They are indications. It's tougher at a higher hardness with better corrosion resistance. Can't say whether it's a magic steel but S45vn is a great steel too. I'm sure most people will be happy with either.

Yeah, I love my S35 and S45 CRKs. I suppose 40 years from now when I'm gone and my son sells them off - the steel won't matter too much :) . By then there will be a new 'super steel' that only needs to be sharpened once and can be stored in a fish tank.

Yep, today's super steels will likely be tomorrow's VG10, only better! 😉
