In terms of sheer function, the Carson M-16 is still one of the best designs ever. They are often not pretty to look at with zytel scales, but I don't care about that. They are popular among military, and for good reason.
I have often thought that CRKT should offer an upscale version of their flagship M21 with better blade steel, ti-liners, DLC etc. I almost have bought one anyway just because I consider it such a great design, even though I would have no use for it.
I have an old M16 03Z. It's probably the one knife I would carry if going somewhere where possible confiscation was a concern. I wouldn't be afraid to lose it, but yet it would serve well if I did need a good knife.
My EDC Darrel Ralph 'Trigger' is really nothing more than the M-16 03Z made with more expensive materials & pivot bearing, etc.
