Just thought I'd ask, is there a difference? From what I hear, CRK is the bomb-diggity, and CRKT is (at least in my personal observation) is Tawain stamped-Just better than Chinese/Pakistani garbage. I've been carrying a "Gregg Lightfoot Tactical Design" Urban Shark...Which IS stamped Taiwan. Got is as a gift, use it half and half with my Kershaw Leek as my EDC. I admit, I have had to take it apart a few times and "re-tighten" it, Just wondering, are all CRKT's bad?

No, CRKT is fine to very good.
It has nice QC, LOTS of different designs, and all the time is looking for new designs and willing to work with new designers.
But they use crappy steels a lot :)

That's what I thought, it's good size, feels very good in-hand, and yes the steel is lackluster at best, but for a beater, I couldn't argue.

Thx, the ENTIRE state of idaho =)

There's a CRKT Ripple I've been looking at, it's a flipper with contoured aluminum handles and IKBS. The steel is 8Cr13MoV so it'll need touchups more often, which is ok, but the $60 price tag has me waffling.Enlans & SRM with the same steel were all less than $20, some even less than $10. It's a Ken Onion design though.

As for the 'made in Taiwan' stigma, I find that the fit and finish of Spyderco's Taiwan-built knifes to be on par with, if not better, than some of the ones out of Golden, CO.

The ripple uses acuto+ steel.... not 8cr13mov

I thought (not fully sure) that some American supermarkets sell a lower specified Ripple variant with different steel than Acuto+. I think I read this somewhere.

There are a few nice crkts. For example, the Tribute folders are perfectly elegant and nicely made, and featuring good enough steel for the intended usage.

Hi Dagon,

You are correct. There is a Ripple being sold (world's largest retailer) that is 8cr13mov but at a lower price than the model using Acuto+.

The wallyworld ripple for 40ish is acuto+ haven't seen the 8cr version though if the ht is done correctly I'm sure itll do just fine. As to crkt its pretty hit and miss from what ive seen.the older versions of the m16 and m21 series always seem to be favorites, the Eros and ripple are pretty decent imo. But in general I don't care for a lot of their stuff. They did release a group of traditional patterns which I thought were in 1085 but even that's changed to a lower grade ss

Honestly, they have almost nothing in common except that the abbreviations for their names both start with 'CRK'.

The CRKT website has the steel listed as 8CR14MoV but I agree with you that it should do just fine. At the price being asked, I certainly wouldn't complain about 8CR14MoV.

Sort of like comparing VW to Mercedes. Both are good, but very different levels of materials, construction, and quality.

CRKT is somewhat a mixed bag. They have many very interesting designs, but sometimes implement them poorly. Wouldn't consider any of them garbage, but its good to handle or check reviews closely before choosing one.
I've had several and most have been traded off.

They do price their products modestly and in general you get a pretty good bang for your buck.
Their higher end items (like the Eros, which is one I didn't trade off) are done very well, but at an also higher price.

Main difference is the blade steel as ya'll have mentioned and liner-lock vs. framelock.
At around $40 its darn decent.

Ah, yep I was mistaken I checked again and the listing I saw on the site was not the Walmart available one, thanks for the correction.

IDK why anyone's talking about the ripple anyways... when you can get the Eros.... ^ ^

Probably cause the Ripple is about $70 (or $40 for the Wallyworld version) and the large Eros is ~$125-150.
But I take your point, the Eros to me is a much nicer knife.

While CRKT is much less expensive and not anywhere near the quality of CRK, there's nothing wrong with that. For under $20 I picked up one of the CRKT Folts Minimalists and it's great. The steel (5Cr15MoV) won't hold much of an edge, but at least I can get my hands on it unlike the real Folts Minimalist. Great for a super light yet tough blade.

CRK is Chris Reeve, it is great, and great in cost.

As for CRKT, its not "Taiwan stamped just better than Chinese." every CRKT I own, all 6 of them came with razor sharp edges with F&F and QC as good if not better than my Kershaw's and Benchmade's. And their warranty and customer service in my experience is top notch.

Both are UNRELATED, and either are good.
