Hey all, I have a question,

I've been thinking about purchasing a Bladelock. Does anybody have any experience with this knife? I just found this quote from AllenC on another thread:

"If you mean a folder for "hard-use do everything" CUTTING, then my Spyderco G-10 Police is my very best.

It has alot of the same features that you like in your Military (long flat-ground blade, G-10 handle slabs, large comfortable handle, large thumb-hole).
The only reason I prefer it over the Military is that it's a lock-back instead of liner-lock, it has a slightly longer blade, it weighs alittle less, and it just fits my grip better.

Now if you mean a folder that can also be used as a pry-bar, reamer, scraper, center-punch, chisel, ect...things that should be done with a multi-tool or a specialized tool--then my favorite would be my CRKT Bladelock.

Good luck,
Allen."

Any other ideas/opinions? I'm looking for something that would be a good EDC. I've seen the positive comments on the Spyderco Police and Millitary, but that's more than I want to spend right now.

Thanks for the help!
:)

I had the opportunity to handle a Bladelock a few months ago. It's hefty, and though the mechanism is quite different, everything on the knife is solid.

Though I'd previously discounted it as a one-off gimmick knife, now it's on my list of knives to get.

I had one of those, but gave it away in the W&C Nude KnifeMaking Contest. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=229488&highlight=BladeLock

It was a very interesting knife. The knife was strongly built with a strong lock. I just had trouble getting used to the opening mechanism. It felt a bit awkward to me. I also had some problems with oil leaking out of the opening mechanism and getting on my pants. Keep away from the partially serrated version. The entire blade was chisel ground, which I didn't like.

Hey Dan,
Use the "search" function and you can pull of some info (including a review I did) on the Bladelock.

The things I really like about it are:
1. It's very strong, like a Buck 110.
2. The lock is very secure and stout, and it locks closed as well as open (kinda childproof).
3. It's very comfortable in my hand.
4. The fit-and-finish and quality of construction is fantastic.
5. It does'nt cost an arm-and-a-leg.
6. When closed, it makes a very nice fist-load for self-defense.

The things I don't like so much, and why it's not my EDC:
1. It's alittle on the heavy side (about 4.6oz). Of course it is'nt much heavier than the Military (4oz), and it weighs alot less than some heavy-duty tacticals.
2. Because of the lock design, it's not "lefty friendly". This is not a problem if you're right handed, and I can open it with my left hand...but it is abit tricky.
3. The blade shape is one of my favorites (it's called a Walker Clip-point, which is kinda like a California Clip-point), but the blade is just alittle too thick to compete with the G-10 Police and the Military when it comes to slicing. But it is one helluva stout blade.

A thinner, flat-ground BladeLock would be very interesting.

Alot of folks seem to have trouble opening and closing the blade. I did'nt have any trouble and within just hours it was second nature. Still, it would probably be wise to try one out before you bought one.

Good luck,
Allen.

There's a new, smaller Bladelock coming out soon. Same blade thickness though. CRKT link

Large: 3.44" blade, 4.5" closed, 4.6 oz.
Small: 3.00" blade, 4.0" closed, 3.8 oz.

I did some cutting with one myself.., and as Buzz mentioned.., I didn't like the opening mechanism either.

The lock up did seem very strong for a knife in the price range.., and I'm sure if someone really likes the style.., getting used to the locking-unlocking routine would be OK. Just not for em....

This looks very promising, the main thing I didn't like about the original was the size. Thanks for the info, I'll have to put the Bladelock 2 on my wanted list.

JClaude42, thanks for the CRKT link.
The new BladeLOCK 2 looks like a winner!

Thanks,
Allen.

Another possible consideration:

Since it cannot be flicked open/inertia opened, etc., it may totally avoid legal restictions in certain parts of the country.;)

I have a CRKT Bladelock, carried it as my edc for a few weeks. I also love the blade shape, and also found its grind not the best slicer of carboard I've had. The lockup is very tight and secure, and I qiute liked it.

But it was also a bit heavy for me (people who do a search on me will note this is a familair complaint... not that I don;t STILL carry knives that are too heavy... :D ). I use it now as a "dress knife" or gentleman's carry... I don't wear any jewelry so what the hell, I use knives as my "flash." Its small and neat enough not to be threatening.

what? the Bladelock 2? that sounds very promising! i was so disappointed when HOK stopped carrying them cuz i was actually itching to get a Bladelock. i'm ok with the size, but since there's a smaller one coming out that would be perfect
BOK told me a story about a guy who had a Benchmade in his car as his car knife and when he got into an accident (rear ended?), the impact was enough to open the knife and shoot it blade first into the backseat.... now if anyone was sitting back there...
that's why the Bladelock would be the perfect car knife since it locks open and close!
can't wait until we order them again, gotta definitely pick one up, CRKT uses AUS 6A on it right? one time i heard it was AUS 8, someone want to clarify?

thanks!

It's AUS 6M.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the input. I finally found a store around here that carried the BladeLOCK so I could get a chance to handle it. Seems to be quite good. I had no trouble with opening it, and I don't really mind the extra weight. Had a better balance IMO, than the CRKT M-16-03 for EDC purposes (maybe not if you plan on stabbing a lot of people...:)

Although this place had a good selection of knives, the guy at the store knew next to nothing. He had several blades with LAWKS on them - didn't know they had LAWKS and didn't know what LAWKS was. Also didn't know what a Benchmade AXIS lock was...

My favorite question he asked me though, was when he handed me an Al Mar Sere 2000 and asked "Have you ever heard of this? Is it a pretty good knife?"

Hmm... is a mercedes a pretty good car? :D
