CRKT Companion Redux

I'm delighted with my CRKT Companion, which took five days from order to my door, across the Atlantic. Great service from Skylands Cutlery.
CRKT are really keeping up the good work, they just keep on producing top value knives.
Since I already have a CRKT Kasper folder I was interested to compare the two designs. I thought they would be virtually identical, but the fixed-blade is noticably smaller.
The sheath system is ideal for me, but should be offered in some sort of ambidexterous format.
All in all, the Companion is a knife I'll enjoy training with.

I just recieved my Companion today, and after using it for some carving/whittling, i have only one real issue with it. The ridges on the thumb-pressing-metal thing on the top (obviously, i don't know what its called) well, those ridges/serrations are a bit sharp, and have left my thumb ragged. any suggestions as to what I could use to smooth them out?

Thanks.

I just received my Companion from Discount Knives. It looks like a quality piece. I currently have a Polkowski Scorpion, Gaunt, and custom Crawford KFF.

I too was a little surprised that the blade was smaller than I imagined. For those that have compared the custom with the CRKT knife, do they have the same blade length?

I took the scales off the knife and am having Mike Sastre make a Concealex neck sheath for me. I've considered polishing the knife to help with rust prevention, but I may just use Marine Tuff-Cloth.

Can anyone recommend someone willing to polish the knife, drill some lightening holes in the handle, and smooth out some of the sharp corners on the handle?

Axel

It is pretty easy to polish it out yourself. (Works for the thumb ramp ridges too!) Just start with Emory cloth and work your way to 1500 or 2000 grit for a high polish. As for the holes you'll need a bit and probably oil cooling. It seems like the price of having this done professionally is going to EASILY exceed the value of the knife! I like mine but you may want to consider a custom neck knife that could probably be had with a kydex sheath for less than the labor may run you to have these changes made . . . just a thought.

Re the IWB sheath with belt loop idea--I've another suggestion: Scott Hendryx. I don't have his address with me but he advertises in the rear of most issues of TK. He uses web belt loops with snaps for his sheaths.

He made several for me a few years back--the only snag was having to ship my knife to him because he had none like it in-house. His quality is excellent & once I got the knife to him I had everything back in about 2 weeks. His prices are quite reasonable, too. I don't know if he works in Concealex, though--my brochure is about as old as my sheaths.

Just thought I'd bring this one back up. Hey, Normark! How's the project coming for the On/Scene Tactical sheath for the CRKT Companion?

Hank

Dang it Jason! It was bad enough when my son appropriated my first Companion. Now I get to start shaking, waiting for their sheaths from Eric!

I come home today, and what do I see, but a package from Eric! He is a master with this concealex stuff! The sheaths are great! These are night and day different from the CRKT ones! I love 'em. Fantastic job, Eric! Folks, you can get them from eric at his website for On/Scene Tactical. Here's the url
