I am looking for any opinions on this knife. Is the lock robust? How thick is the handle? Is there resistance when you open the blade like with a lockback, or does the blade open smooth like an axis lock. Does anyone have any pictures of the guts of this locking mechanism?

There were some production problems with the DOG. They were supposed to be at the distributors in September of 2002. They are just starting to ship now. As for your questions. The knife is somewhat wide to accomadate the lock. It doesn't use a "C" clip like the Benchmade. It uses a mini shock absorber instead. It is quite a complicated mechanism. The knife opens smoothly though and you can loosen the pivot to make it open even faster. They come with 2 sets of grips, which is a nice touch. Look for the DOG to hit the dealer shilves in a week or so. I hope this helps.

Been waiting to pick up a DOG for a few months now. I went to a gun show last weekend and finally found one! Only one person had one and none of the other knife vendors had even heard of it yet. This vendor only had one and it was the serated blade (which I didn't want but what the heck... had to have it).

Been carrying it a week now. It is pretty hefty for EDC. I like a big knife though so I'm living with it. The knife is pretty awesome. I'm impressed and it feels every bit as good as I'd hoped. Opens smoothly right out of the box and even flipped it open first try. I played with a Griptillian (sp?) today and was the first time I'd played with an Axis lock. I noticed the question above asking about the resistance. Not really. Very smooth. It says that the new lock also helps hold it closed but not really any resistance to speak of. Flips open easily. It feels very sturdy. The clip is very small and the knife sits very low in the pocket. Clip is almost at the very end of the knife and stays out of the way. AUS-8 blade and nicely machined parts. Nice knife.

Now, having raved about it... here's a bad downside. The clip is on the bottom of the knife and not by the blade (or middle of the knife) like all my other knifes. Yes, this does keep it out of your grip area and seems nice. However, now when the knife is clipped to your pocket the blade is actually folded up so the point is aimed at you. Twice now I've reached into my pocked to grap it and pull it out and sliced my finger with a blade that is just barely open. Just did it again about an hour ago. The first time I figured it was a fluke. Now, I'm thinking engineering problem. Maybe I need to tighten the blade so it doesn't open the slight bit it has but then it probably won't flip open as easily. Not sure yet. Just thought I'd bring it up. If it happens again I may actually stop carrying it! I guess carrying it all day it kinda worked open the slightest bit. Normally when you reach the thumb and forefinger in to grab the top of the knife at your pocket and pull it up you are fine. If the blade is open a bit it's pointed down and out of your way. Not with this one.

I'd like to hear some other responses about this. I thought about emailing CRKT on this but didn't see that option on their site. May have to call them.

LOL... other than the blood shed... I love it.

If the knife's lock is also designed to provide resistance when closed, then I would say there is something wrong with the knife, or that you do indeed need to tighten the pivot.

Sounds like a hefty little number, though.

Nvincible, I take it you haven't carried a tip-up before. Are you placing the knife at the back end of your front right pocket? The back side of the blade (the non-sharp side) should be pointing back towards the seam, so that the knife will not open. If you are a lefty, or if you are a righty but the knife came with the clip installed lefty-style, you will have to switch the clip to the other side.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought of that as I've never even noticed a "tip up" before. I have been carrying it in my left pocket as I don't stick my hand in that one as often.
I guess I either need to switch pockets or flip the clip around as you mentioned. THANKS!

Which brings up another question... where do you find the Torx screw drivers that small?

Sears carries small torx drivers. You can purchase a set or buy them individually. Benchmade also offers the "Blue Box" which has various sized bits as well.
