CRKT Lightfoot M1 versus CRKT Ryan 7

Thanks, Cosmic Superchunk. I appreciate the info. I've been doing a lot of research and reading reviews on the Commander. It seems that the overall cons outweigh the positives. Of the many reviews that I've read about it, people have been dissatisfied with the locking mechanism, the ball detent, and the quality control in which Emerson displays toward their business practices. Moreover, many, many people have been disappointed with the knife being too "loose" in the closed position, whether in pocket or out. Furthermore, I've seen and read absolutely nothing bad about the Axis Lock. I also think that the re-curve in the Commander might hinder me from using the knife for general, all-around, multi-purpose cutting, which is what I will use the knife for. I believe the spearpoint in the Presidio is better suited for general cutting tasks. Plus, it is less expensive than the Commander, yet still made right here in the USA. Cheers!

Here's a picture from my review:

Note: That is not an optical illusion; the liner is actually slightly thicker on the non-locking side.

My review should be done at the end of next week, if you wish to see a more in depth look at the knife.

Looking forward to read the review. BTW Transmetropolitan rules.

I too have an M1 and have enjoyed using it for the past year or so. I don't have much more to add to the previous posts, but one more thing to think about is the great customer service CRKT has given me. I wanted a pocket clip for the opposite side and with one email and a couple days waiting, they sent me one free of charge. It's nice to have the option to carry it tip up or down and have the clip on either side. The thumbstuds were a bit rough but a swipe or two with a fine file took care of them in no time.

Yerscattergun,
Please comment (good and bad) on the locking mechanism and blade shape of the Commander. Is the lock strong and stout? Does the "re-curve" on the blade hinder cutting use as an EDC in any way?

Sorry I took so long to answer your question. I have a Mini Commander and
a full size. The liner lock on the full sized Commander appears to be weak when you compare it to some others. However, out of curiosity I put a thick
sock on my hand and proceeded to spine wack it HARD against a book on a desk(repeatedly), Cold Steel DVD style. The lock did not slip at all. In my opinion, the lock on the Emerson might appear a little weak, but it's up to the task of a self defense folder although I'm sure there are many locks that could hold more pounds of pressure on the lock. For prying purposes, I would feel better with an Axis lock though. One other thing I'd like to add is that the
full sized Commander has the same liner thickness as the Mini. I believe the
Mini's lock is much more suited to the small blade rather than the Commanders
large thick heavy blade(i.e., the Commander should have thicker liners)

As far as utility use, I do not use it for that, as it is to me a defense folder only. I use my Native and SAK for cutting chores. I really like the Emerson's
though for carry. That CRKT M1 looks pretty neat though, might have to pick one up next! :)

just to mess with your head, I would get the model 7, then get Tom Krein to zero grind it.

I second the Axis Lock comment.

Of the two CRKTs, the M1 is a better knife, in my opnion. I have both, and the M1 is a stronger, better designed piece that allows for four position carry.

It is also very easy to Wave.....

How is it possible to wave the M1 Lightfoot? The thumb stud acts as the stop-pin. short of modifying the blade i don't see how that could be done

I think he means by pulling the knife out at an angle and allowing the studs to catch on the seam of the pocket.
