I just got a new crkt m16 to replace the one stolen and when I ordered I was sure I saw that it was aus-8 steel but when I went back to the site the specifications just says stainless. Is there a way to tell which steel the blade is since it's not marked.

Thanks in advance

1.4116 most likely. I think they went from AUS8 to 8cr, to 1.4116. I could be mistaken though. If I wanted one of those badly, I’d either look for an older model plain edge on the second hand market, or be content if I bought one with Veff serrations.

if older stock could be 8cr14mov...if newer 1.4116. the sf version is still aus8.......

I got one of these but 16997225769436632291887777439453.jpg16997226378652252740434138335419.jpgit's an oddball. The liner lock is backwards it's for lefties. I don't know what steel it is. I got the sneaky suspicion that is made in China. But I have no evidence to back up my theory. This one is every bit of 10 to 12 years old I think, if I'm remembering correctly, maybe older.

I bought this M21-14 , couple of years ago , primarily to try out Veff serrations :

Either the steel , heat treatment , and/ or sharpening process , was subpar . The points of the serrations just folded over , way too easily , just cutting some thick plastic bottles . 💩

I wasn't shocked . CRKT is infamous for taking some good designs and failing to use good materials and QC .

Result is a poor performing knife .

If you want a knife for actual "hard use" , I cannot recommend CRKT !

any softer hardened steel..... think gerber type brands 5cr or 7cr type stainless serrations will do that. I've seen it on a bunch of brands on plastic coke bottles......

Curious if anybody has tried out any of their USA model. The redemption looks interesting. But I'd be hard-pressed to drop that kind of money on a brand that I have no confidence in.

My brother just ordered one of the new US made so I might know soon if they are better

I know they aren't the best quality knife, I like my benchmades or spydercos better, even a couple sog or boker knives I like better but originally I got it as a gift and then it was stolen so I had to get it again. And I like the double lock in some ways. And both my old one and new one I can get really sharp with the veff serrations being extra sharp, I've never been a fan of serrations but I like the veff serrations. And it will never be a really hard use knife for me, I got others that already have that job. It was mainly because the original had sentimental value made me want it again.

My 21-14 described in ad :
"Premium 8Cr14Mov "

I don't think it's a terrible knife . Certainly should suffice for routine moderate EDC . I kind of like the design and look , actually .

Just think there's better for hard use .

I had an M21-14something. I thought it was pretty cool at first, but came to detest it. A junkie relative stole it to buy drugs. I didn’t miss it.
More recently, I found some flavor of M16 left behind in an old Buick I bought. It has a tanto blade, even more repulsive. For a number of months, it was missing in the clutter that tends to accumulate, but resurfaced in the last week or so. It may be possible to overstate the wave of indifference that engulfed me, but I do not as yet have the words.

I hope it's a good one, let me know what you find out when he gets it and I might consider getting one. I'm seeing prices above $200 for that particular knife. It's a big risk considering the reputation of that company. Thank you in advance

This is one of those knives where I think... Just get a RAT 2... That's big and stout and a liner lock and made in Taiwan from good steel. Or if I need a tough knife that can fight and pry, my Voyager XL? You can sharpen the AUS10 on rocks, right? Or a SAK + one of those short military clip blades like the pilot knife?

What are these now, $70 something? No thanks, I will buy a Kershaw if I want cheaper US knives. What am I not getting about this knife? The history behind it? The serration pattern? I like the flat serrations (opposed to jagged) on the "new" Spyderco serrations - like on a K390 LW model.

I can't sharpen the serrations on CS knives (and I love sharpening serrations) so I don't use those but there! A Recon 1. Better in every way. Waved, even. Instead of that handguard thing..

Yes that's true but in all reality I don't think crkt can ever compare to a cold steel. Dare I say the older cold steel. Cold steel serrations work excellent until they get dull. I've got a sharpener that is specifically made for Cold steel serrations and it doesn't do such a good job. Pretty near impossible for me to sharpen Cold steel servations

Technically possible , but a huge PITA ! 💩

So I do like the Veff design for sharpening .

I'd love to try out one of David Mary David Mary 's custom serrated ! 😍

Spyderco is not near as bad as Cold Steel .
yep. spydercos serrations sharpen easily on edge of sharpmaker stone. then knock burr off other side. piece of cake. they do some of the best full serration knives.......

My son recently "donated" his M16 to the TSA flying out of Madison, WI. I had just recently re-beveled it for him and sharpened to a razor's edge. 8Cr steel. Easy to work with. It was about 8 years old. Now that it's gone for good, he replaced it with a Spyderco Delica. Good upgrade.
