CRKT M16-14Z...A pretty good folder, IMO...

Here's a dumb question: can anyone s'plain to me CRKT's model numbers? I have googled, searched this forum, searched CRKT's website and tried to figure it out based on the specs of the knife. I've figured out the letter suffix relates to the model and the type of handle material, but the "16" or "21" and the "-14" or "-13"? e.g. M16-13SFG = Special Forces, G10 handles, but I can find no correlation between the first 2 numbers and blade length, thickness, style etc. What's the main difference between an M16 and an M21? Can anyone edumicate my dense noggin, please? It's probably glaringly obvious, right...?
I'm no expert on CRKT knives, but I think that the M16 series has a Tanto blade, where the M21 has sort of a leaf-style blade...Anyhow, it has to do with the blade-style. The 10, 13, or 14 is some sort of a code for the blade-length.

About 1/2 an hour ago, I received the replacement folder from CRKT for a (discontinued) Point Guard that they didn't have parts for to replace, and it's a good one...A CRKT M21-02GL...(The"L" means that it's a left-handed knife...Pretty cool, since I'm a "lefty"!.).:thumbup:.:thumbup:.
Well, after having a chance to play with my new "lefty" CRKT folder for awhile, I have to say that the quality is 100%, but eventho I'm a "lefty", I think that I should have requested a regular right-hander folder, as it seems that I have trained myself to use right-handed liner-locks, and using this "lefty" folder seems alien to me...(This is a true "lefty" folder, as EVERYTHING on it is switched-around...).

Ya whiner. Just can't be happy, can ya? :D

I've got seven or eight CRKT's, and I never knew they made 'lefties'. I've got to look into that. I'm not a lefty, but my son is, and and some of the smaller CRKT models might be more to his liking than some of my regular CRKT models, especially if they're left handed. He's pickier than his momma.

I've got a m16-14sfg, I love it, I keep it razor sharp and it tends to stay that way, very solid and durable, and I love the veff serrations

Great knife... I just need to switch the clip to tip up.... Don't have any torx bits :(

My good ole 2cents

Well, it seems that what started out as one CRKT folder, has made me go alittle overbored on 'em:

CRKT M16-01KZ (8Cr15MoV, pe, black, Zytel)
CRKT M16-10Z (8Cr14MoV, ce, satin, Zytel)
CRKT M16-12 (AUS-8, ce, bead-blast, Alum.)
CRKT M16-14Z (AUS-4, ce, satin, Zytel)
CRKT M16-14ZSF (AUS-4, ce, bead-blast, desert camo Zytel)
CRKT M16-14SFA (AUS-8, ce, black, Alum.)
CRKT M18-02 (AUS-8, pe, bead-blast, black insert, Alum.)
CRKT M21-04 (AUS-8, ce, satin, Alum.)

Dan,

A little bit of OT, but seeing 8Cr13MoV doesn't deter you, & your liking beefy & solidly build knife, I suggest try Enlan EL01. It's a flipper too & build like a tank. After cleanining up & broken in, it flips very well. Also, I found the heat treat of Enlan resulting in harder steel than Sanrenmu (other brand I have). It's even harder than my old CRKT Point Guard in AUS8.

Perhaps you can tell us our impression on it :)
I was so impressed by EL01 that I got 2 of EL02 ...
I have retired the PG cause CRKT doesn't make any in good steel anymore (it's 420 nowadays) and subsequently discontinue it.

Hey glockman99, you ever seen the crkt natural? It's a massive tank of a folder that weighs in at 10.5oz I might get one at some point.

Our numbering has some logic to it...I will try to explain:
M16= Tanto or Spear Point designed by Kit Carson
M16-XX 10= Tanto 12 = Larger Combo edge Tanto 13 = Combo Edge Spear Point 14 = Large Combo Edge Tanto (for plain edge it would be 02, 03, 04)
SF = Special Forces Double Flipper
Z = Zytel Handle
G = G10 Handle
T = Ti handle

There a bunch more renditions but that gives you an idea....oh, M21's are the drop point version...

I've carried a Titanium M-16 for years. I bought it at the PX and ended up getting them for my sons. I use it in the field and on the range and I highly recommend it.

Not that I am a huge abuser of my knives.... but does the liner on the smaller versions of the M-16 seem a little thin and flimsy to anyone else? The large versions have nice beefy liners but the smaller versions have liner locks that are half the thickness of the larger versions.

It does seem thin, but the geometry is really good...you'd really have to be cranking on it to get it to fail IMHO. I can press against the spine as hard as I can, and I get a little, slightly noticeable flex, but nothing major

damn!

it started out with you really liking the one m-16, now you have ten of 'em!

thats probably a record:thumbup:.

I have a M16-13 and I love it. I have had the Z models of this knife and have given them all away. The regular one hs Al scales, 4-way clip, Aus-8 blade, and is a little thinner handle. It gets carried interchangably with my Kershaw Skyline and it is much beefier. Oh yeah and mine is pre auto lawks, still has the secondary just not spring loaded. Great knife, and great company to deal with. I have several different models from them and all perform as I expect them to.

Today, I received a CRKT Hammond Cruiser that I bought at eBay (brand-new, and VERY inexpensive), and I have to say that I am VERY impressed with this one too! This is one solid, beefy folder for not much money!.:thumbup:.:thumbup:.

Bump.
I always wanted a CRKT M16 after I handled one a few years ago but never got one, so... incoming is an Orange Carson M16 E R. Can't wait!
