Does anyone know if the CRKT M16 series, with a 3" or longer model, comes with a plain, non serrated blade?

I did some looking around and "I" couldn't find anything in the reg. M16 line with a plain blade. (I am assuming a reg. M16 is about 3.50 in. blade) Someone will know more on this than me. You can get a plain blade in the EDC line (around 3.00 in. blade) but the knife is really small (handle is small) so you might want to handle one first. **I would suggest you look at the M21 line, you can get plain blades in 3.2 in. and 4.0 in. I have a M21-02 plain edge and I really am inpressed with this knife. Lock-up is very solid and the handle is thick enought to fill your hand (i wear large sized gloves) It "feels" 3-4 times as large as the EDC I have.(M16-01k) I also really like the AUS8 in both, it seems to hold a good edge(i can get it very sharp) and is durable.

Hope this helps, Walter

I appreciate the feedback. I have fairly large hands and want a beefy, good quality blade and handles. For some reason I just don't like the serrated blades. I do want a "tactical" knife though. Couldn't seem to find the plain blade in the M16 - 14 series. I didn't know there was the M21. I'll check it out.

I really lucked out when I picked up my M16-04 it has the aluminum handle and plain Aus8 tanto blade..

I really like this knife

Base exchanges (on military bases) seem to always have the above knife in stock. Plain edge aus8 aluminum handled m16.

I love my EDC M16 11K. 3 inch, but mine is half and half. For more info on these, you can check out my review on this part of the forum, and my lock testing on this knife in the general area called "It's hell being a linerlock." I have thoroughly tested the lock in this knife and in my case, as well as another couple of testers here, the knife is very tough. However, one person on the forum has a special forces M16 that reports his liner lock barely functions at all. I recommend you play with it in the store first to make sure the lockup is nice, because of this apparently isolated case.

Hi There all, New guy here :D

I have been lurking about here a short while and now feel i must speak up if i may :)

A short while back in a local surplus store, i was looking through the knife assortment they had an heard fella say to friend behind counter about schrade being gonzo, i near fell over, was not up to snuff on the knife world in sometime.(After lurking here a bit an learning, i understand what happened better now thanks to people here)

Fella was as shocked as me when i pulled out my LB5 and my Mini Uncle Henery(Lady Finger i think it was called in the day), and told him they rode in thier respective pockets for last 18-20 years.

Fwiw, Both are still in great shape and well polished due to denims nature.

So after some chatter bout new blades ect, i aquired my first new steel purchase in many years,(Man in hindsight..) Was Ken Onion's Scallion, which i thought would make a nice dress knife.(Wickedly sharp)

Then i came across this sight, and was again back at the question of liner locks all over again, even after knowing the Henery never failed or showed any signs it would fail before my LB5 over the years..

Sorry to be all over the place here guys...

So, i decided best thing to do was read and find a better knife to replace my LB5 ,now in storage.
Then came a framelock i think its called, from Gerber, a Truss 2.5 for me an a Paraframe 2.0 for my son.

Then the next day found a new stone set from Gerber aswell and a cheap work knife called a wrangler for a 10 spot, so a couple of them came home.

4 days later, i go out with good intentions and come home with a (Relates to thread and relevancy to my diatribe) CRKT M21-02, but before i could get home with it, wife had me stop at another mall, where i scooped a BM Mini-Ambush.(Which put a smile on my face thinking about new steel, new freindships to make)

Anyhow, The M21-02 is now my EDC Knife, over all others, not including future purchases however.

Even though it had a blemish in the blade i worked out near the hilt or chor, whatever the end stop is named, and reworked it to my liking fininshing off with 1400 wet sandpaper on mouse pad, thanks guys, that is another trick i have learned fromt his place.

So i wanted to add, even though this CRKT is a liner lock, It won my faith over all my newer knife purchases to this point,(Damn roll lock, didnt realize difference between it an axis till too late, on the ambush i mean,Not knocking it, just it doesnt make me feel very safe.

and tonight i have come home with some buck croc's and some gun blueing, for the wrangler i am thinking.

Anyhow, sorry to drag on my story, im like that :p

And nice to meet you all, feels like a good community.

Thanks Artfully :)

Just thought i'd pipe up with my piece on them the CRKT aswell, seem to be taking a beating here by the custom and lockback gang.

And after carrying a much less secure liner lock for over 18 years, i think i can trust this one the CRKT's use.
Aswell, if it did ever fail, theres the carson flipper to stop a complete fail.
I noticed many other types of knives lacked this kind of feature altogether.

So imo, i dont think its an digit donor knife like many would have one think.

Make sure you read the specs carefully...
Some of the "M16 family" uses AUS-4 for the blade-steel.

I Noticed that too,in my searching.

Any idea as to why they made some of thier run with AUS 4 and 6, and others like mine with AUS-8?
(Earliest production models perhaps?)

Actually, the newer models are using the 'cheaper' steels to keep costs down for CRKT. The older models have the higher grade steels.

I still don't know much about the difference in steels. IF the CRKT M16 04 and the M21 04 both come with non-serrated blades I was thinking about getting one. Now the question is, which steel do I look for?? Is the AUS 8 not too good? If so, and I can't find another of these with better steel, is there a good alternative in roughly the $100.00 price range?

Thanks.

BTW Welcome to the community.

AUS 8 is fine for EDC. The edge holding is not even close to that of SOMEEE steels (D2 and VG10 come to mind), but AUS 8 is a good steel nonetheless. It's your entry level "good steel" in my opinion--the steel that doesn't bother me to use, but I am concerned if it gets below AUS8 or 440C.

When you buy an M16, you do it for the features and ergonomics--if you need hardcore cutting ability, you'll want to slip into a mini grip/grip or a delica/endura.

What you do get is a titanium nitride coated blade that is absolutely gorgeous...an amazing feel to the knife....the LAWKS system and a great very tested liner lock...the smoothest action, comparable to that of an axis lock.

I'm not a big delica fan based purely on feel and ergonomics, but the mini grip sure is nice. Might want to check that out for only about 15 dollars more street, as it comes with 440C and has the fantastic axis lock. It's a lot heavier in the pocket though, and in my opinion, feels a lot cheaper and is a lot less pretty. But I still love it!

CRKT does a good heat treat on their AUS8A, in my opinion, and the M21 is an excellent example. I am very disappointed with my AUS8A Camillus EDC, though. I'm spoiled by the edges that I can get on older Cold Steel and Spydercos made with AUS8A, and the CRKT knives compare pretty well.

A plain edge is in production on CRKT's site, I have only seen the AUS8 combo edge on the M16-13. The model number for the plain edge spearpoint M16 is M16-03.
