Hey there!

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong area, but I'm too new to figure out how to post it in a different place.

The CRKT M16, so many variations! Anyone carry this knife? Love this knife? Swear by this knife? Modify this knife? Pics please!

Thanks!

I had a m-16 zytel edc size. It was nice at first, but the liner lock wore out in a few weeks. I probably won't buy one again.

Mine was shifty as hell early lock up, late lock up and it flexed.

So glad I lost my two

I started using a M16-02 years ago when I was in uniform. I am now on my third knife. I watched CRKT start with the LAWKS system and move on to AutoLAWKS. Overall, it is a fun knife but I question if it is worth the going prices. Got to watch CRKT lower the quality of their blade steel and raise their prices. More money for less knife. In my mind, CRKT has taken a great knife that could be used as a core model for a decent product line and ruined it. Now-days, there are much better knives in the same price range.

Don't get me wrong, I like the knife. If I was buying one again, I would consider the M16 ER because of the orange scales and better blade steel than most of the series. But, with knives like the RAT II and the Utlitac series, why would anyone consider a M16?

I'm with Sabre Cat. I had a M16, but gifted it to a friend. I also noted liner lock flex which makes me understand why they needed a Lawks system.

I have a bunch of the m16-14sfa american assembled ones with the manual lawks setup not the auto one..... i got from a close out. I like the knives but wish they were plain edges. Mine have been good working knives for the price points i got them for. I also have the Taiwan version with the auto lawks deal. I prefer the sfa versions but those are long gone.

I alternate edc'ing between my Spyderco Yojimbo 2, and a CRKT M16-SFG. The one with the veff serrations. I love the cheap beater! It takes a wicked sharp edge so easily and holds it suprisingly well! I just wish it did not have the serrations, as I've grown in my knife collecting I've grown to dislike serrated edges. I love the spine serrations on my Benchmade 375 Adamas though.

I use to really Iike my M16. It is the M16-13M model which is one of their higher end models(Type 3 anodized 6061 scales, Ti nitride coated, Aus 8). It was one of my first higher end folders that I bought many years ago. I only use it as a beater at work now though because it can't hold an edge at all. CRKT is terrible at heat treating their knives and is notorious for lack of edge holding. I originally thought it was the Aus 8 until I tried a knife of Aus 8 from a different company. Night and day difference. I will never buy another CRKT myself. There are much better knives at the same price point.

I am considering one of these. Because I don't have a large Tanto-Point folder with a flipper.

The new aluminum-handled (M16-04S Classic) versions of the large 3.9-inch M16 Tanto now have 4-way pocket clip mounting.

Which is a feature I really like to have.

The main downside is that it has a bead-blasted blade of Aus-8A. Which makes it easy to corrode from past experience.

And, as I said, their heat treat sucks man. I have never seen Aus 8 this poor at holding an edge. I have owned quite a few blades in it too. Even cheap companies like Cold Steel and Sog have better edge retention with their Aus8. CRKT's quality control has been spotty too. I would look else where if I were you man. You can get a much better folder, in better steel even, for the same or less money imo.

Please remember I like the M16 series as you read this. My favorite is the M16-02 Z to be exact. Yes, it is a Tanto, if you were wondering.

If you have your heart set on a M16-04S Classic then go for it. But, I gotta let you know that a Tanto Utilitac II will give you most everything that the M16 can except the aluminum scales. AT HALF THE COST!

You will pay between $60-70 for the M16. At least that is what I see them go for. Is an aluminum handle and 4-way pocket clip mounting worth that much? In my mind that is a lot of cash for a knife with a corrosion prone blade with marginal heat treatment. Please do yourself a favor and look at more options before you fork over that kind of money for a CRKT knife. You can do better

It has been my experience that Tanto knives get used and abused. It is the nature of the blade design. On top of that CRKT liner lock knives are known to have problems. Plus your aluminum handle can be troublesome in the rain or any time it gets wet. And your four point carry? Not a big deal really once you figure out if you want tip up or tip down. That can be done while you are still in the showroom.

Not a good knife, have had 3 different models. The M21-02, m21-04, and a SF model....cheap and will eventually fail you...

If you want a good Tanto look at the Benchmade Stryker or Griptillian.

I have an M16 04 plain edged that I've had for at least 10 years. I've put that knife through all kinds of use and it's held up great. I can't speak for the current production but mine has been fantastic.

Thank you to those that replied to my post above!

I will not get one after all.

I have had a few CRKTs and never had a problem with them.

I knew they weren't going to have the best edge-holding, compared to other brands with higher-grade blade steels.

Seems like an unnecessary post...just my thought...

It's a placeholder I think he just wanted to relay that he thinks they're crap and will come back later to fill in the details but is posting so he can find the thread faster
