Ok guys, so in my other thread, I was looking for a Knife to go in my main pack, something compact but thicker than an SOB, it had to be able to do the prying, window breaking and all the fun stuff. Just something that I could rely on, also something that I could take in the woods, and use in the odd times that I need a beater knife.
So, I went to the local hunting shop and found the MAK-1.
Designed by James Mcgowen(a canadian firefighter), its made from 3cr13 stainless steel (not sure about that stuff yet, but it seems nice) 4 7/8" blade, 10" overall. 54-56 rc with g10 handles.
So, with the original edge, it was bad. No shaving, just a mild edge, but it was made to be a beater. I had to change that. Now, its convexd with an edge that you can seriously shave with.
So, I wasen't expecting this knife to used in the woods, or for it to be my main hunting knife or anything like that, its made to stay in the car, and be there when I need it. But I figured I would try how it worked with the new edge.
I have to say I was very surprised. I did all the types of shavings I needed, it would bite deep or shallow what ever. The only thing was I needed to hold it as a draw knife, or use if left handed, which was hard for me.
It would also make shavings good to take a striker, just really thin.
Also, it would strike a firesteel fine, which was nice.
I then tried to cut some gardening hose, you can hardly see the stab I did with the un sharpend tip, then below I chopped with the sharpened edge, which it went through in 4 chops.
Then I tried going through a nail with the unsharpended tip, it didn't do much damage to it, but it also wouldn't go through, did ding it some though.
Also wanted to test chopping, now its a short knife but it weighs alot for its size, 10 Oz I think, a BK7 is right around 13 Oz. I have to say though it chops better than the RC6, not alot but in 12 chops I got through a 2" piece of wood.
So, in short for a $65 dollar knife, and the geometry it has. I am impressed, it needed work to the edge, but that was fine. I do that to every knife any ways. The sheath sucks, its made ok, but its nothing fancy. And, there is another kit you can get for $20 more, and it has the same stuff as pictued here just adds a seat belt cutter. Another thing, after hitting the end, the window breaker fell out, in not too worried about it as it would still break windows with the end, but I lost it so im out anyways.
Well, thanks for looking guys, Ill do a woods review of it soon just to see how it handles stuff.
Thanks everyone.
