Ok I recently purchased a knife for my girlfriend, it was a Crkt falcon...the smaller one. It was purchased...maybe about 2 to 3 weeks ago and so far there has been only one problem. This one screw that is located on blade just above the ramp that acts like a thumb stud has become very lose. It has been tighten many times but it always keeps coming lose again. I've heard that this is a common problem with many Crkt knives. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what have you done to fix this? or can it not be fix? does this sound like a warrenty problem?

Thanks

Tyler

There are many different types of Loctite. If you want to be able to get the screw off in the future you would want to use a low to medium strength formula. Loctite 222 or 222MS should do the job. 290 would also work well but requires localized heating to aid in removal.

I couldn't find Loctite locally, so I bought it from an online marine supply shop. They also had them at motorcycle supply sites. I got the small bottle for around $8.00.

222 is especially formulated for small screws and to be removeable with hand tools.

Just needs some loctite...You can get some from Canadian Tire...

Pretty pricey though for those little tubes.

As much as I like them, CRKT stuff is very expensive here in Oz. I don't agree a quality product sould require the buyer to repaire it, especially when it is still new. Send it back and make the manufacturer deal with the fault. I know it is probably a bigger hassle to send it back than fix it yourself, but thats why good companies have customer service.

I don't believe it's a repair as such though. I'm not sure that you can say that CRKT is at fault here. It's just basic maintenence that needs to be done sometimes.

I have to loctite a lot of my knives.

With Cho being in Canada, sending the knife back to CRKT would cost a great deal and he would be without his knife for a long time and would be taking the chance on it being lost in shipment. This is such a simple problem to fix that I would not send it back to CRKT if it were me.

I recently also bought a mini-Falcon from CRKT. One of the screws from the clip disappeared - I emailed CRKT and they both sent me a set of replacement screws and said if I felt anything was wrong with my piece to return it and let them deal with it. IMHO that is why I will never hesitate to buy one of their products.
That being said, since it is just a screw issue, use the locktite and if that doesn't work, then return it to CRKT and they will help. Or, since you live in Canada, you may find the shipping/time hassles may outwiegh the simple cost of buying another one! ;)
Even though I'm in Seattle and relatively close to CRKT, I find that for $40 (US) it's as cost effective for me to simply buy another one... And then I've got a back up, too!

ok cool I'll run over to Canadian Tire and pick up some loctite and if that doesn't work then I'll probably send it in. Thanks to everyone for all the help :D .

*Cho*,

And be aware that a little Loc-Tite goes a long way, so don't saturate the screw, just LIGHTLY coat the threads.

Does it come with instructions or anything?

what do I do?

the problem got a lil worse...the screw actually came out and then she lost it...but now she found it. Do I lightly coat the whole screw and then screw it back into place or do I screw it in first and then apply the loctite?

Sorry I've never done anything like this before.

"... so I always use my wife’s nail polish
Never let me down..."

That's what I use too....it works!

Interesting idea, nail polish. Then you can also clean it out with acetone.

*Cho*, what I do is apply a thin layer over the threads on one side of the screw, then screw it in to the perfect tension. You have 20 minutes before the Loctite sets. I've found that completely covering the screw threads will lead to a mess when you unscrew, and I can't notice any difference in locking strength.

Loctite is great. I use the blue and occasionally the purple for really tough screws. But like others have mentioned, be sure to use it sparingly, I have found that it can penetrate rather easily and gunk up your knife.

ok cool

I'll definitly keep all this in mind when I go to apply it.

so....any brand of nail polish work best by any chance? hehe

Don't forget when you decide to remove the screw, and it is kinda tight to remove, to STOP.

Go and a get a soldering iron and heat up the screw to break the loc-tite seal, then continue.

Er, in regards to putting on fingernails, Shu Uemura works great, but is kind of expensive. Cover Girl's Nail Slicks (I believe that's what they're called) are very smooth and relatively cheap. You can find them at Rite-Aid pharmacies for about $2 to $3 each. I really like Urban Decay's line of colors, but their stuff will gum up very quickly, it's a little too thick.

Hey, you asked. :)
