CRKT Serengeti, a felony waiting to happen?

Okay, so I cruise over to the CRKT website just to see if they've got anything interesting, and I notice they have their new catalog online. I click over to take a look at the new stuff, and I see this folder called the "Serengeti". For those of you who haven't seen this yet, its a knife with a skinner blade that features a LOT of belly and aluminum scales (AUS 6, of course  ). The thing that I noticed right away on the knife was that instead of scale materials, it had two small fixed blades on the sides:eek: ! On one side there is a small hawk-bill blade with a partially serrated edge, and on the other side is a small upswept blade. Again these were made of AUS 6 (by the way, I'm no steel snob, my primary EDC is a Delica II with AUS 6, I just don't happen to like the rust-prone CRKT beadblast). I'm not sure, but the small fixed blades looked like they were hollow on the handle portion, and their held onto the knife by placing one of the holes in the tang around the pivot screw, and then hooking one of the other holes on the knife into a kind of clip about midway back on the scales which sandwiches the small blades into place. I know I'm not describing this very well, but head over to the website and check it out.
My only question is, would this cause me a problem with LEOs if I was carrying one? If they do charge you, are you looking at 2 counts of carrying a concealed weapon because there are 2 blades? Again, a felony waiting to happen?

I think it depends on where you live. In California, it is illegal to conceal a fixed blade of any length (at least that's my understanding.) I don't know anything about VA knife laws.

anybody know the fixed blade laws in NYC? As far as I know it's ok, if the blade is not more than 4" long... but I could be wrong???

larrytwohig-Here is a link to the laws http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/ny.txt The way I read this, is that if the cop wants your knife or wants to lock you up, than he can for ANY knife. They use the term "dangerous knife", which could mean any knife really. This is just my opinion, I am not a lawyer, I just build machinery for a living.;)

this knife which is actually a mike franklin design (tactical serengeti) has been out for almost a year and a half I believe. As to my knowledge, there haven't been any problems yet. But what about the EDC M-16, Pesh Kabz, and all the other new designs. How freakin' sweet!

WOW CRKT comes out with allot of new designs each year. I wish BM, MT and Spyderco would come out with that many every year.:(

I believe it is based on a Mike Franklin knife with the same name :)

in all the free states it will be legal. the 2 smaller blades are at best about 2 inches (blade length). just because you are carrying three knives in one doesnt make it illegal.

however,if the main blade is longer than the law allows, you cannot carry it. and the same if you are not allowed to carry fixed blades.

its a nice knife, and a fine description, spyderjon. ive been waiting for this one to be released for some time now and am glad to see it going into production.

After reading your subject line, and description, I was all set to spout my usual semirant concerning cops, knives and the courts. Which is.......why carry something that reeks of WEAPON NOT TOOL!!!!???

That's the reason I carry a CS knife that has a Sheepsfoot blade and Says "Land and Sea Rescue" right on the blade, instead of the same 4" blade in a Voyager, Gunsite, or, heaven forbid, Vaquero (with that wicked looking blade). There is nothing that you can do to a person with that Vaquero that can't be just as easily done with the "Land and Sea Rescue". But, you must remember that you're are dealing with idiot Sheeple that will consider whether the knife was designed as a weapon or tool (actually, even if it is designed as a weapon that's, in reality, a tool of a certain type).

So, that said, it's surprising how many cops out there are knife knuts themselves (or gun nuts, I know I used to be a cop and a gun nut), and, after looking at the CRKT site, this knife combo just doesn't look that threatening to me. Plus, a reasonble explanation can be given, due to the fact that the primary knife is so obviously a skinner, and the two small knives can readily be explained as complimentary "tools" for dressing, caping and whatever.

Bottom line is, I don't think you'd have to worry all that much about multiple felonies, but the big question in my mind is......why would you want to carry this around anyway? It looks to me like a knife combo possibly well suited for it's designed purpose, but little else. And it can't be very light. it looks like the three weigh in at way over a 1/2 pound not counting the sheath. Why would you want to lug this around on a day to day basis? Just my 2 cents.
