I've had a CRKT M16-14 for well over ten years. The liner lock has worn to the point of being dangerous, so I sent CRKT an email, and since that model is discontinued and they cannot repair it, they are going to give me a 90 dollar store credit instead.

I need a new hunting knife for field dressing deer and have been looking at these.

Not technically a hunting knife, but I like the looks of it.

Any major differences between the fixed blade and folders? I've always used fix blades in the past, but since both have a belt sheath, I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Comments are feedback are appreciated, I know very little about this stuff.

Additionally, what is your guys' consensus on this type of sharpener? I've had the same type in a different handle, but I think it's pretty much worn out and needs to be replaced. I don't have any experience with a stone.

Mossback looks decent.
They're running the steel a bit soft, but it'll be easy to sharpen, and shouldn't chip.
Krein designs a good knife.

as CRKT hunting knives go, I checked one of these out at Cabela's the other day. It's a very nicely finished knife and put together knife. Felt nice in the hand.

I know you said $90 store credit, and it's marked on their site at $99. But hey, if that knife cost me $10 difference, I'd go with that and get a decent knife for $10 rather than a cheaper knife with money left over.

Carbide sharpeners eat Steel off the knives... They'll get a knife sharp, but in the most abrasive way possible outside of over grinding on a grinding wheel. I keep a couple Smith's pocket pals and 3 way's handy, but avoid using the carbide pull throughs. Only if in an absolute pinch would I actually use 'em. That said, not bad to have for last resort if ever in a pinch.

I love my free range folder. My favorite around the house/yard work folder. The handle is very comfortable and provides excellent grip.

Had an Endorser, was nice, but a bit smallish for my taste, and not a huge fan of CRKT's assisted opening mechanism next to my Kershaws, so gave it to my stepson to gift to his dad last Father's day.

Both were extremely sharp out of the box, certainly not edge holding champions, but easy to sharpen right back up.

Fwiw, you can currently buy the Free Range folder AND fixed combo for 42.99+ s/H at blade HQ... Granted your store credit is "free" (minus the cost of your m16), but that's a great deal if you're considering both, so I'd suggest use the $90 on something else. Maybe the mossback and the Endorser for $20? ($10 if you go with Bird & Trout).

The Squid and Shenanigan are both decent knives as well, respectively. Get pretty good general feedback.

I also have the Clark Fork Fillet knife, makes for a nice lightweight and compact tacklebox knife.

I already have the Squid.

That fillet knife will definitely be ordered, since I'm in need of one.

Wow, that really looks nice. Thanks for the pic.

I don't have a problem throwing in a little cash for something that's worth it.

I'm liking that one myself.
