Crkt

I also think most knife knuts like and own all kinds of knives, and can appreciate different levels of quality.

This is the key point in being a knife aficionado! To appreciate a knife even if you have better, more expensive knives at hand...

For $50 you can own CRKT's best knife, a full size M-16. It is decent for the money, and is overall a sound, well-designed knife. For $116 you can own an Al Mar Sere 2000, which is just an outstanding tool. I am in much more awe looking at what I got for $120 with a Sere 2000 than I am with a $50 M-16.

In my opinion CRK&T knives are NOT bad knives, just not as good as Spyderco knives. To my eye they are not as well made, designed or 'tight' in terms of tolerences. The steels they tend to use are not as good either. However... they are cheaper products and you get what you pay for, both represent great value for money and you get what you pay with both. As Sal said, not better, just different. It is very difficult to make like with like comparisons with CRK&T and Spyderco, different specs, different knives, different price points.

CRK&T knives are not at all bad and I own a few!

Different knives have different uses for me... when I'm on the boat, or working in the woods, I don't carry my best! I love my Spydercos, but they stay home at times when they might get gone for good! Bought a bunch of CRKT knives on sale, from $9.95 for ? steel, to $25.00 for an Apache that says it's ATS-34. They cut, and sharpen OK, and they lose well! :-)

as a new knifenut, the CRKT line was a great first introduction for me, especially to the works of bladesmiths like pat and wes crawford. i agree with everyone so far who has said they think crkt's are great blades for the bucks. as far as EDC goes, i rotate b/t the small kff and a full-size pointguard. the build quality is good considering the $$ i spent, and the addition of the LAWKS on these two models give me a good feeling in terms of confidence that the lock won't fail accidentally (that and the fact that i don't have the $$$ for one of their customs, yet. hopefully i'll have enough $$ by the NYC blade show!). while i have noticed some rust spots on the steel and liners(sooner than i would've expected), it wasn't something that a little flitz, tuffcloth, and elbow grease couldn't take care of. i must say though that the new s-2 midsize i picked up for $62 inc. shipping is fast becoming my favorite all around pocket knife, and the ats-34 blade is standing up much better than the steel on the other crkt knives..

that being said, i'm NOW waiting (drooling more like) for my spyderco chinook to come in.. besides my bm 43 bali, it'll be my most expensive knife yet, and i'm really looking forward to getting it in hand. from what everyone's been saying about this diesel folder, i made a good choice..

For the money, a spork is a fine cutting implement. The question is, does it stand up to what Spyderco can do for the same money. And why doesn't Spyderco manufacture a spork, just to meet the "I won't ever spend X dollars on a knife" price point?

Knives like the Meerkat and Calypso Jr. Lightweight are available at lower price points, featuring premium steels, improved locking mechanisms, and airtight workmanship. CRKT will sell knives that fold (the blade steel - not the knives themselves) just to get below $50. There comes a point when you have to look beyond how little something costs, and ask what you're getting for your money.

I buy Spyderco knives because regardless of what market they're selling to, they sell the best they can. If Spyderco can't sell a top quality knife at the price point, they won't sell to it. You'll never see a "crapped out" Military with FRN, a paper thin lock, and AUS6. The Chinook couldn't be the Chinook for $50, so it won't ever be that cheap. There are any number of high quality Spyders that sell for street prices around $80. Is it that important to save $20 that you'll give up quality? Do you appreciate quality, or do you just want as many knives as you can accumulate?
