Just wondering what the masses opinion is of crkt products in general? I get the feeling on here that they are on par with gerber- i.e. cheaply made. I owned and used the crkt bear claw on my pdf for years whitewater boating, seemed pretty tough. I like the looks of some of their designs, but they are all pretty inexpensive and I know you get what you pay for! Just curious what yinz think.

Actually it's possible to get some really great knives for relatively little money. The Spydreco Tenacious and KaBar Dozier are two examples. I don't have any CRKT knives, but I seen and handled a few and I think they are decent knives. The only important thing is how well it meets your needs.

Inevitably, if you get bitten by this knife bug you will want to expand your collection and explore different features such handle materials and blade steel, but if all you are looking for is a good serviceable knife then you don't really need to spend that much money.

CRKT are a good buy for what they charge. Nice variety of cool designs by popular makers and good using quality. I have had a good experience with their customer service many years back.

Basically, I feel the same way about their product line and I also had good experience with their Customer Service (not more than a couple of years ago).

IMHO , they have put out some really cool knives over the years and some really odd ones but so have some other knife companies which do not get 1/5 of the flack CRKT does , for some reason... anyways , their older models such as the S-2 incorporated titanium handles and ATS-34 blades , quality knife is every respect ! I own three of them.
Some of their models such as the Rollock were not very good at all and then when you take into account they used Aus-4 on many models, that tends to turn folks off.

Nothing wrong at all with their Aus-8 ( regardless of the moaning you hear about how bad Aus-8 is on BF , it is still a very respected and commonly used steel ).

The Ti M-16 line are fine knives and the aluminum handled M-21 is a nice blade as well , Mr. Carosn did CRKT a service by designing that M line.

CRKT has had many famous designers design knives for them , if they were a 'fly by night' company one would think these famous , renowned folks would not have collaberated with them.

Lastly , much of what you read here and on other knife forums is opinion and not fact , it is up to you to make the final choice on what knife you like.

personally i think crkt are great. i've got a m16-10kz, a large point guard and the mo'skeeter combo edge. Even the mo'skeeter(which i got for $3) is better than the POS gerber AR3.0 i've got.

I've also had no experience with gerber customer service but just last week i contacted CRKT about a replacement clip for the m16, they sent me 2 clips and 3 sets of screws free of charge. that puts them way ahead in my book.

I contacted them through e-mail, about buying replacement parts for a M16-13LE I've carried IWB for about 4-5 years(rust), Pivot +2 Screws.

Less than a week later received full set; pivot, spacers, screws, clip+clip screws.

And I live in Oz too.

Good CS for sure.

I own several CRKTs and love them. I've given quite a few to friends and relatives and they seem to love them too. Great value.

I always felt that CRK&T products were a step down from the quality of some of the larger names. I had not bought one in a few years before I purchased the highest priced one to date, the Hisshou. I was very pleasantly surprised by the obvious quality and fit/finish of this short sword. With the newest release of the Ken Onion designed Ripple it looks like Crk&t may be attempting to upgrade their image. Only time will tell!:)

CRKT build quality tends to be pretty acceptable and blade steels of several recent models are a decent midrange (8CrMo13 or AUS8 for example). Furthermore, their designs are probably the most creative of the affordable production industry.
For example, I think that the Summa is quite unique, it looks a bit like a tactical laguiole, and the construction and blade are really convincing at the price.

I bought a Ripple a couple of weeks ago after reading the thread about Ken Onion designing some knives for CRKT. I have had some CRKT knives over the years that were well made but have not bought any recently till the Ripple. The Ripple is about as well made a frame lock that I have owned by a production company. Excellent lock up and very good fit and finish. It is one of the smoothest and fast flipper knives I have owned. The blade was sharp but the first half inch at the tip was not quite as sharp as liked but it was fixed on a Sharpmaker. Quite of few factory framelocks I have owned when gripped firmly the lock bar/frame would move all the way over to the far side. Not on the Ripple. Good job by Ken and CRKT. Time will tell if it holds up.

What i like about CRKT is their ability to recruit a fair number of the top knife designers to design affordable versions of unique custom designs for them.Clearly they must have a reputation within the designer/maker community of meeting their obligations to the originators. They have oftentimes been the route for me to satisfy my curiosity about a unique locking system -without buying a "original" big buck version.Have never put enough use time on one of their folders to have a educated idea about how they hold up . Have had one of their MacGowan designed rescue tools (MAK-1)in my tool kit for a year or so -it gets used for the kind of obviously abusive tasks that nobody's folder is up to -looks pretty rough at this point - but hasn't broken or failed to get the job done yet.
The knives I've handled in the last few years have had very reasonable fit and finish for their selling price.

I have one of the origanal m16z from crkt. i got it on sale for like $20. and short of the fact that i lost the pocket clip its been a great knife! ive used it hard for years and years now. it takes a good edge, and it wasnt a couple hundred bucks so i dont mind beating on it a little. lol thats just my .02

CRKT produces decent knives. I own and use over a dozen of Benchmade and Spyderco knives but I also have several CRKT folders (M4, M16 and M21) and I am very satsified with their quality. I don't know about their cheaper products, but those Carson's models are really good designs. I would always recommend a CRKT folder to a person who is not a knife nut and doesn't care much about details we are obsessed with but only wants to have a decent EDC knife.

The above statement is very well said.

They don't hold an edge as well as my higher end knives but they are great knives for the price.

CRKT has a wide variety of designs with solid build quality for an affordable price. They're also known for tackling oddball designs that no one else would think of trying.

Their steel is run soft for my tastes (and they use AUS-4 in the blades of some of their cheaper knives--isn't that liner steel???) but they're very well made and I recommend them all the time to mechanics and carpenters and the like who tend to be really rough on their knives. If the knife is getting banged around a lot it's more important for it not to break than for it to hold an edge a long time. ;)
