Let's keep this a positive thread to honor a man who did so much for the environment please. He died doing what he loved, and trying to bring awareness to the plight of wildlife.

My family will miss him and I'm sure many many others will too.

Prayers sent for his 8 year old daughter, 3 year old son, and wife Terri.

Man that sucks bigtime. I haven't watched his show lately, but I used to love the guy. People with that much charisma don't come along often. He will never be replaced.

What a freak accident. I always said that he sometimes pushed the envelope and put himself at tremendous risk. I guess the odds just caught up with the poor guy. What a way to go, I always thought a snake or a croc would kill him.:( :( :(

This is VERY SAD news. His love of life and his tremendous efforts for the enviroment will be missed in the world.
Between Steve Erwin and Jeff Corwen I have enjoyed many hours of wildlife TV.
He will be missed in the world.:(

A real tragedy, he was a great spokesman for the planet. I respect him for his accomplishments. All the best to his family, and thanks for all that they have contributed.

It is a shock. He lived as though the Gods told him it wasn't his fate to be killed by a croc. Always thought the media overblew-up that thing with his kid.

He had to have had an allergy to the venom, is all I can think. Or Aussie ones have bad-ass venom. Here it's like a bee or scorpion sting; never kills ya. I've seen huge ones; they have eyes like a cat or alien, with the vertical pupil. Evil-lookin'.

It is a loss. Like the volcano people who got killed by a volcano, at least he was doing what he loved.

Sad. Another senseless death. Smoke tonight.

My wife was actually crying when we watched this on CNN. Apparently, he took a ray's barb right into his chest and either the venom being injected right into the heart or the barb actually hitting the heart caused the death.

They had an aquarium director on, said that the barbs could be as long as six inches.

The article said that the barb pierced his heart...I heard 10" possible on the barb's, but 6 could reach your heart too. Direct injection with a barbed spike would do terrible damage to a heart--poison + tearing of tissue. I hope it was quick:(

He didn't have a chance. :( The spine pierced his heart. And the venom is really nasty stuff. My wife's uncle was a fisherman in Singapore. Not the type working on a trawler. but rather a guy who went out in a 14' wooden boat, set nets, and fished with a hand line. He took a stingray spine in the calf and it put him out of work for a year or more. Actually couldn't fish for a living ever again. (His wife turned what had been social mahjong into a livelyhood for the family for several years, but thats another story.)

Maybe the Asian/South Pacific/Australian critters are worse. Hell here in Taiwan even the furry caterpillars can give you a hell of a rash if they come into contact with your skin. Different locales, different nasties. Even stinging nettles in some places can be deadly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ongaonga_(tree)

But I stray. He was a great entertainer and scientist. I'm going to miss the guy.

I loved Steve's stuff, especially when he wasn't as well known worldwide back in the late '90s. What a larger that life guy:( He was nuts:)

I remember watching some of his stuff years ago when he was going after a sand goanna.

"Right. Now there is probably a sand goanna down this hole. I'm gonna reach in and try to pull him out by his tail. Now, if he's backed into this hole, he's gonna latch onto my finger and yank the meat right off the bone. Woooo!" Then he reaches in and luckily pulls large angry lizard out of the hole. Steve gets to keep all of his fingers this time.
Anyone else see the one where they are chasing feral cammels across the Oz outback in a jeep like vehicle only to rake Steve across a tree and nearly tear his ear off. The crazy bastid had it tacked back on in a chopper if i remember correctly:eek:

What an awesome guy, and he actually knew what he was doing. Not like that hack Jack Hanna who acts more scared of the animals than excited.
Smoke up for a very awesome guy:( Crocs rule.

There are so many pretend superstars these days that it is always refreshing to see a real person doing the real thing. He was a nut; but, an informative and entertaining one, and he will be missed.

Sad news indeed!

He'll be missed for sure. Prayers for his wife and kids.

He made a living of cheating death...perhaps dying of such an extremely rare occurance ain't so bad after all.

Just read this.

John Stainton, Irwin's friend and producer who was on board Croc One when Irwin died, said in the statement.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet,"
"He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind," he said. "Crocs Rule!"

Saw this news first thing this morning. Couldnt believe it. Mother Earth just lost a good servant. I will surely miss him. How I love his show in Discovery. Farewell Crocodile Dundee :((

What a shame that Steve died. I surely enjoyed his shows for years although I often thought he would end up badly but with a croc. I feel bad for his wife, kids and friends. I know they will miss him dearly. He was bigger than life.

I'll never forget the ease in which he handled poisonious snakes, with terms like 'there's a little beauty." No one else talked like that. He changed the business he was so good at.

His daughter went just about everywhere with him. I haven't read all the articles and hope she was not on location when this happened. The barb went under the ribcage and into his heart. He was directly over the fish and you can envision the tail stinger arching perfectly into place for this freak occurance.

I didn't agree with Irwin's politics, but I liked him Almost everyone did.
This makes me sadder than I'd like to admit; I mean, Steve Irwin was nothing to me more than a organization of dots and lines on a screen, like HI forum. But he came through.

Their zoo is thriving, and I think his work will continue. It would not shock me in 9 years or so to hear that voice again, from his Daughter.
