Cross-grained Maple Bowie

This is my second opportunity to use this cross-grained spalted maple that has been purposefully spalted by Larry Bailey.

That spalted maple is gorgeous. Does 'purposefully spalted' mean he lets the maple start rotting before cutting into it?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Peter

yes. I don't even suggest that I understand the process, but Larry Bailey "makes" this stuff and then sends it out for stabilizing.
It's year long process.
I understand this is not for everyone. It's rather bold. But since it's end-grain, the pattern runs latteraly through the piece and is the same on each side.
I think it's groovy.

I agree:D It's beautiful looking stuff!

Makes sense having it stabilized. I have some that is NOT stabilized and it is VERY light in weight and softer than regular maple.

Thanks for the reply.

Peter the deal here is to get the white fungus to grow but to not let wood rot. I must control heat, moisture and time. this way when the wood is cut,you can not brake it with your hands.then when it is stabilized it is like a rock. But I know the color and look is not for everyone. West coast maple is no good for this. I've bought a lot it, but it is just to soft. Larry Bailey
