I have a slice of micarta that I could make a couple of sets of handles if I cross grain(layers perpendicular to handle)cut.
I can't seem to find much info. Probably just not the correct search input.

Besides the obvious unorthodox look are there any potential durability issues? Or maybe processing issues?

Micarta gains most of its strength from the resin, and should be equally strong in all directions. Lots of makers are doing hidden-tang knives with Micarta handles, which would depend on its strength in all directions, and also means they're finishing it at all angles.


Rosarms is one example of somebody using it in the "cross-grain" direction in their guards and butts:
