Crossover numbers for Edge Pro stone grits

practical question, with the 1200 can you skip the 1K ? is it just a replacement for the 2k tape.

I wouldn't do that because the jump from 600 to 1200 would be too large.

You need the 1000 grit stone to set up the edge for the 1200 grit stone.

so if you go all the way to 6k tape the only benefit of this 1200 stone is the cost vs 2k tapes cost on the long run ?

I think it prepares the edge better for polishing, you can still use the 2000 or 3000 grit tapes then jump to 6000.

There is a difference between a stone and the Polishing tapes.

So where are you guys getting this 1200 grit stone? I can't find it in any of EP's retailers especially accuratesharp. They are the ones with no hassle shipping to here.

Only way to get it is to call EP directly or you can email them if you have ordered from them before.

I too received a 1200 in the mail early this week thanks to a fellow forumnite. Been busy with other aspects recently, but I'm eager to lap it and try it out. What's the 1200 grit equivalent for Japanese grit water stones- off the top of anyone's head?

I just havent been able to see a discernable difference between the 1000 and the 1200. Maybe it is the particular 1200 that I got, but my 1000 just seems to be a tad finer (I know that doesnt make much sense!)

I just got my 1200 yesterday and will try to use it tonight on my Super Leaf if I have the time. I think that being able to jump straight to the 6K tape and not bother with my 2K and 3K tapes would make this stone a nice addition that is worth the money. I'm kind of thinking my S90V and other very wear resistant steels may still need the 3K tape to progress to the 6K tape after the 1200, but maybe the Mother's Mag Polish on the 6K allows it to cut good enough that even on my S90V I can skip the 2K and 3K tapes. Time will tell.

Make sure you lap it before using it. :)
