Now THIS one I am very excited to post for sale here on Bladeforums! The grind on this one is just superb, especially towards the business end of the knife.....the edge! Think apple seed or tear drop shape. But not heavily convexed. I'll even tell you how this was achieved! First, pre heat treat edge was taken to .020"...a safe enough thickness for carbon steel in an oil quench. Post heat treat, the edge was sharpened at an extremely low angle. I have no idea what it was, but the spine was just off the stone. That edge bevel was taken all the way to apex, to where edge on there was almost no light reflecting back. Then I blended the shoulder that was created by that low angle sharpening into the blade flats during the post heat treat finish grind/polish. The final edge bevel was put on at around 30° inclusive (15° per side), and you can barely make out the actual edge bevel! It took no time at all to create that edge, and I started on a 600 grit stone, alternating sides every stroke, minimal burr formation. Final grit was 8000 JIS. The knife is just incredibly sharp...and very thin towards the cutting edge. This is NOT the hunting knife that will double as a camp knife, for sure. This is the kind of hunter you use in the kitchen to scare the daylights out of a tomato! Ever seen one of those thin edge grind that when you touch it, the edge sort of "rings"? Yeah...that's this one!

OAL: 8.5"
Blade: 3.5"
Handle: 5" Crotch Walnut, Tru Oil (pores filled), went with a "gloss" finish this time
Steel thickness at ricasso: .105", tapered to tip
Edge: 15° per side, 8000 grit waterstone
Sheath: basic kydex with chicago screws for tear down/clean up

It started drizzling on me during the photo shoot, so you might see a few tiny rain drops. I do apologize.

AWESOME grind and heck of a value for sure. GLWS

Wow. Beautiful slicer. Especially great finish on that walnut.

Hi Stuart,

Is it possible to see a picture with a reference for scale? Or perhaps an in-hand shot?

This knife is really beautiful.

Cheers,

Andy

Please excuse the crummy quick photos and the grimy hands. My fingertips are always chewed up like that from sharpening knives and testing sharpness. Hopefully this gives a better perspective on the actual size of the knife. The handle is made to accommodate a gloved hand. A manly hand....not girly one!

Walnut is spectacular. Really. WOW.

Blade looks phenomenal, too. Can't wait to test mine out on the first deer, this year.

I have a few gripes about this sale thread, though...

'...the grind'? Really? Was it ground? Because if it was, I'd be less impressed, but I'm pretty sure I know it wasn't. I'm pretty sure this was done with FILES AND SANDPAPER. And that's significant. Especially significant to me, because I happen to have used a bit of CruForgeV, and I know that this stuff positively SUCKS to hand finish, as the wear resistance is akin to the nastiest tool steels out there. This had to be an outrageous amount of work with hand tools, which brings me to gripe #2...

That price, I'm guessing, after deducting what you've got (roughly) in materials here, puts your hourly labor rate at about what the seamstresses in the Great Triangle Fire were making.

In 1911.

Sweatshop labor.

Almost cost them money to work.

Should be almost twice this much, bud. It's certainly worth it!

Paypal sent. I've been looking for a thin hunter, & wow, this a museum example of one....I just couldn't keep going back to see if it was taken yet, had to pull the trigger. I'm still loving the first knife I got from you & this is really a step up even from that great piece. Ya know, when the majority of the responses you get are from other knife makers drooling over your work....I don't know, that seems to suggest this just might be a special work. Hey, one note, I know I'm just gonna toss the Kydex sheath...if you've got a cheap leather sheath, pls ship the knife w that, otherwise pls ship the knife only...I will never subject that blade finish you created to the scratch-happy kydex devil. This knife needs leather aesthetically anyhow - can't wait Stuart - thanks!!

Thanks TripleT - congrats on grabbing that amazing Apache Hunter....what a knife! I'm excited about this one by Stuart too, it's such a great time to be a knife-addict, these custom makers are just so much more creative and talented/skilled than ever before....and it's nice men like you, Stuart, and all of the knife makers and members who replied to this single post that make me proud to be on Bladeforums...there are good people left, I knew it!!

Knife is sold to van dammet. On my iPhone now but I'll have more to say when I get home. Bunch of great guys here. Thank you all

Scott and Brian, thank you so much for the compliments. And especially to Matthew Gregory as well! That was very nice of you all. "Grind" is indeed the improper word for what I do. "File" would be it. And lots of elbow grease on the CFV hand finish, no doubt! Scott, I'll do whatever you tell me to do. No sheath is made, yet, and unfortunately I don't have any more of those cool pre-made leather sheaths to include. I'll be more than happy to ship it as is (no sheath), I'll be more than happy to make a kydex sheath, and I would ALSO be more than happy to order a few more of those leather jobbers and then send it to you when it comes in (only problem with that is you would have to fit the knife to the leather when you get it). I'm easy, brother, just let me know what you prefer.

Feels like fall here in Central Texas. Finally. I'll mark the thread as SOLD, and wait to here from you, S. S.

Hey Stuart! Thanks so much for being flexible for me on the sheath, please do ship with no sheath and then ship a generic leather one when you get it....I can pay for that extra shipping, just lemme know. Can't wait to get this beauty in hand, I'm honored sir.
