What with the wait for W2, I started poking around and found this steel.
From the little I've read, it sounds like a great steel for most anything that doesn't involve a hamon.
Anyone care to give me a little review before I plunk down cash for it?
I'd be forging it fairly thin, less than 1/8 finished, for kitchen knives.
Thanks,
Andy G.

I've been thinking about tring some myself. Like you say, I sounds good. The only thing bad I have heard is it's hard to hand finish. Interested to see others thoughts.

I have used it. It is difficult to hand sand, but not terrible. The steel itself is great, holds a great edge and cuts and cuts and cuts. It won't however show a decent human.

Yah, I saw the manganese and assumed that differential hardening wasn't where you go with this steel.
Supply is limited, but I doubt I'll use it all up myself, and I don't see it used much- perhaps whoever bought Crucible will do another run.
Sounds like a good steel for brushed or other coarser finishes.

I've used it some. It forges and heat treats easily. It is a bugger to hand sand but not as bad as say, S60V. It takes a fine yet aggressive edge. I like it for pattern welding- substituting it for the 1084 layers. For instance, I have a CruV/15n20 chef knife in the cafe where I cook in the mornings, I sharpen it maybe once a week when it loses a little push cutting ability for tomatoes. Maybe 10 strokes on each side with a 1200 grit water stone, and it's back to a shaving edge that it will hold for at least three days of normal prep work. The fine toothiness that it holds makes this possible.

Perhaps the biggest detraction from it is that corrosion resistance is about as low as 01- not very good. This improves a lot when it's used in pattern weld steel.

I really hope they make more of it. It's a nice performance upgrade for damascus.

Very cool, Salem, thanks!
Looking forward to trying it. A few local chefs are looking for something really nice for cooking demos, I think I'll try your recipe! :)

I have made quite a few knives from cruforg v and like it a lot. like others have said it is a pain to hand finish . I made a big chopper from it with a very fine edge and it performed great, in fact it won both chopping competitions I used it in with no edge damage and still shaving sharp.
I have heard from someone that another company was making it again under another name but haven't seen anything yet.

Good steel. I have about 200 pounds of it left and Adam Desrosiers said that he bought all of the bar stock they had left............around 5000 pounds!!!!!! He said that the hunting guides up in his part of Alaska just love the stuff.
