Does anyone know anything about the steel that crucible is developing specifically for forging? I heard something about this steel a few months back and it piqued my curiosity.

Keith
There are a lot of people that make there own steel here is a link.

Thanks for the link. I was looking for this kind of information earlier. My question in this thread is about the steel that is being developed by the Crucible Materials Corporation especially for forging, but I am also very interested in individuals that are making their own steel.

Hi Keith,

I & some others have just begun to experiment with Louis Mills method of producing steel inna charcoal furnace with good results, we've also (with the help of Mike Blue) done a couple of tatara smelts, I've had some success with "wootz" making inna gas furnace & using thermite is also doable (though I've only had partial sucesses)

If there's anything that I can help with you can generally find me on Britishblades.com though now that I've found this forum, I'll pop in quite often

I worked with some at Dan's place a few weeks ago... moves kind of like W2 under the hammer, but that's really not where the improvements are.

More information regarding this steel will be made available at Blade show. I'll let Dan announce it, but I'm pretty sure it will be ready for the show. VERY exciting, as it's been designed to make a substantially improved blade using the inherently under-controlled techniques those of us without heat treating ovens employ.
Sorry for being cryptic, but it's hardly my right to say any more, as this is mainly Dan's brainchild. It'll be worth the wait, I promise!:)

GRR!!!!!! just kidding, thanks for the sneak peak Matthew sounds like fun stuff.

Colin, WELCOME!

Sounds like this is going to be an exciting material. Hopefully there will be a place that those that aren't going to Blade will be able to find out what Dan had to say.

Blade show is over and nobody has answered the question. Was there a presentation for the new steel? Since I'm also interested, I post here to put thread back to the top.

The guys from Crucible said that they want to have it out around September. They are doing the final tweking of the formula so that it will slide effortlessly through the rolling machines.:D

Does anyone know what the cost per pound of this steel will be?

they didnt have a $ on it yet but if i was a betting man i would go with tween 4-7 bucks a pound

and no i have no clue as they didnt even know when i talked with them at the show

all i know is that it should be well worth any extra over the STD. steels
