Crucible forging steel

Just got a reply ( I love the internet).
Kerri is checking on it tomorrow and will get bact to me at work, or by email.

My rep just got back to me. The steel will be 1086V. The melt is set for year end. It will be specifically alloyed for forging blades. Kerrie will keep me posted. I am going to try and get a sample.

Calling it 1086v would be misrepresenting it. It was designed from a blank slate with the only considerations being the properties of the end product, and the equipment commonly available to work and heat treat it. It has evolved, with testing through 4 formulations. The last word I had from the metallurgist that has been developing it at Crucible, is mid-late November melt. I do know because of the formulation it must be made immediately after relining the forge, which is done twice a year.

I agree, Dan. There is already a 1086V or 1086M from Howard Clark that some are using.
The Cucible stuff is not even close.

This is a new steel, why not have a new name ???

This will be very confusing!

So I gather this is a steel with about .86 percent carbon, vanadium, manganese. low
alloy. What makes this different from a clean version of 1086?

I think that Crucible forging steel will also contain a measurable amount of chromium... Dan, correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Material should be melted within the next 10 days. We will come up with a suitable name and hopefully the name will help avoid any confusion. yes - it will contain some chromium - measurable but will be kept to a minimum.

We will roll rounds and flats as recommended by several members of the forging community. We may even have some sheet sizes available.

More information will be offered in the coming weeks.

all the best

Woo hoo!!!!!:D Any word on what the quench "speed" will be?

Since the minute alloy ingredients will alter that very little, I'd guess about the same as regular 1084. Use fast oil and you should be in good shape.

This forum shows what a small world it is. I sent an email to my Crucible rep, Kerrie Kengor at 9:40PM and she gets back in 20 minutes. She emails the go-to guy in Texas and he emails back the info. I post it here, and find out that the go-to guy is Scot Devanna. ( Kerrie said to say Hi, Scott).
Small world, indeed!
