Crucible Problems

Local news here in Syracuse says that the bankruptcy is necessary for them to get through the current situation, but that it will allow them to survive the automotive industry troubles. We're hoping for the best here. Syracuse has suffered enough

Got the word a while ago that Bruce had been laid off. Aren't most corporate bankruptcies more about credit protection than business termination?

Rob!

so if I ever want to make a knife in s30v I should probably buy the steel now?

no no no no... that better not happen.. does that mean that champalloy L6 would be gone.. .. they've gone too goddam far with this horseshit depression

i'll be out back sharpening my pitchfork and boiling up some tar... :grumpy::grumpy:

Well, it sure wouldn't hurt to stock up. Prices may increase and I suspect the specialty stuff we use would be the first products dropped if they need to trim their production further. I guess what I'm thinking is that knifemakers are probably the smallest part of their customer base, so... :(

as bad as it sounds they are nto the only specialty steel maker out ther

i love them and the ppl but if the biz was not run well then they need to rethink some stuff

if i had a few K$ i would stock up on some of the stuff i use the most and might talk the kitchen knife guys into helping me get a few sheets of cpm154 in 3/32 thickness
between that and my cpm3v use i can due without all the other stuff if i have to

Figures this happens just as im shopping around for stainless steels as I transisiton to folders....I was wondering why no one had cpm154 in stock!

I think i'm going to stock up on 1" round L6 its cheep and sweet

For a guy with cool initials you sure are a bastard! :D

O i see how it is, it is not very long and has to be forged to size. its like a 8" by 8" by 2" thick block so not real good for stock removal. but then again i have not tried forging it yet.

Has anyone talked to the guys at crucible about what might happen with speciality steels? Or the business in general? I know there are guys here who keep up with that stuff alot better than I'll ever do just wondering if anything has been mentioned.

It's too difficult to predict.Much of their tool steel is used in the auto industry but other industries are hurting too.If the economy recovers quickly it won't be bad but the Harvard/Yale types are clueless.

I ordered some 3V 3/16"X2"X36. One piece was $93.00 but when I asked for 5 it was about $76.00 each. I can only imagine I would have saved more if I asked for about 1-2 grand worth. I have bought as much in the recent past with less savings though.

Did you get it direct from Crucible? That didn't occur to me :o

OK, you're not a bad guy then. :D Yikes. Have fun with that.

Yeah called 800-365-1168. Usually deal with Amy and get things shipped at a decent price and quick but she was out so I called and asked for a price on a single piece then uped the quantity. I would have bought the same quantity regardless.

Excellent, thanks for the tip! Now I gotta sell something to raise some cash. :foot:
