Recommendation? CruWear or s30v on PM2?

No steel will hold a super keen edge (like popping your arm hair or push-cutting phonebook paper easily) for too long if it is used to cut stuff like cardboard; does not matter whether it's s30v, m390, k390, or rex45. They do make a difference when it comes to holding a sharp working edge.

Prefer s30v over Cru-wear, more concerned about edge holding, not so much about toughness. Not using my PM 2 for impact. 🤣

My particular PM2 is chippy. It's in S30V.

I've been so unimpressed with my particular PM2's steel that I don't want to buy another knife in S30V - even though I did, a Para 3.

Maybe it's just mine. Most people don't seem to have this issue.

I'd love another PM2 in a different steel.
Haven't had that issue. Have quite a few knives with s30v blades from both Benchmade and Spyderco including a PM 2. Have cut quite a few different materials with the PM 2 and no chipping, Have not hacked into metal, wood nor used it as a prybar. For those tasks I would use a different knife or something designed for prying...

If done correctly cruwear will out perform S30V for real world uses in most catagories. If you're doing controled lab testing S30V may have a small advantage in edge retention (or if you only open envelopes and cut packing tape), but in actual everyday use for all tasks cruwear will cut longer as it has much better fine edge stability ... especially in knives with finer edges (better performance for actually cutting things ... you know knife stuff). S30V isn't a bad steel it just isn't as well balanced a steel as Cruwear.

I would rather give up some corrosion resistance for better toughness/hardness/edge stability. I mean there's nothing "wrong" with s30v, but if there's a better option, I'll take it. I don't have enough time in life to not pick the best option.

I find with my couple s30v knives they never get to use all of its edge retention from carbides, because it usually rolls or deforms cutting something before that point. I think there's alot of value in cruwears higher hardness and edge stability to survive cutting things with no apex damage and live out it's whole edge. I don't have cruwear yet, but it seems on paper very similar to my k390 minus a few carbides.

For the knives I have in s30v, someone did them correctly. The knives have continued holding their edges, thus I haven't needed to buy them with CruWear or any other exotic steel blades. I have other knives with LC200N, magnacut and Vanax superclean blades specifically for use in wet environments and salt water. Other than that s30v suits me for EDC use. I do have other knives in different steels besides the corrosion resistant ones, like s35vn, 20cv, CTS-XHP, VG10, D2, 14Cr28n, San Mai VG10 core, CPM-154. AUS-8, ZDP-189, 420HC and ATS-34 from Buck. Plus other various carbon steel blades like 52100, SK5, 1095, 1075, 1055, L6, 3V, K390. I use some of these knives at times out in the woods, camping, hunting or carry EDC once in awhile with various results. But mostly use my s30v blades for EDC.

The only s30v blade I've owned was a military factory second. I really liked the steel. I'd still probably have it if it had a tip up option.

I've experienced micro-chipping on a number of my S30V Spydercos. I just recently got a Para 2 Salt in Magnacut and its excellent. I would vote for that.

Anecdotally CruWear has performed better for me (as far as its time between touchups). Ive had zero corrosion issues. Now that being said I have had very reliable performance from spyderco’s S30V. Its no slouch and there is a reason that its been one of their “go to” steels for so long.

My cruwear is a GB2 and S30V is a military. Ive been thinking about a CW M2 since I cant get an OG Millie in it right now. I do think the GB2 is thinner behind the edge than the Military. Even with that, I feel as though I touch up the S30V more frequently
