I love the Hinderer design but I'm new to the knife world. Can someone explain to me the difference between the Kershaw Cryo II, ZT 0566, and Hinderer XM-18 3"?
I currently own a few CRKT knifes (Ultima, Drifter, and M16-12ZLEK) but I must have a Hinderer knife. I am leaning towards the ZT because of the price point works for my budget.
Whats the difference in Blade Size, Overall Length, Blade Quality/Material, and most of all Price Difference? I've done some research and I would like some confirmation aswell as opinions on each specification. If anyone has a large picture of these stacked that would be amazing.
I am a car guy and from my understanding the XM-18 3" is the Ferarri, while the ZT 0566 is the Audi, and the Kershaw Cryo II is the Hyundia?

Material
Cryo II: 8Cr13MoV
0566: ELMAX
XM-18: S35VN

Length
Cryo II: 3 3/8" Blade 7 3/4" Overall
0566: 3 1/4" Blade 7 3/4" Overall
XM-18: 3" Blade 7" Overall

Price
Cryo II: $60.00 MSRP ~ $37.50 Real
0566: $180.00 MSRP ~ $144.00 Real
XM-18: $750.00 MSRP ~ Edit $385.00? Real

Without going in to much detail, if you are fine not having a true Hinderer knife.... Go with the 0566.

Unless you can get an XM-18 from Hinderer himself at the retail price, rather than the inflated secondary market price... I feel it is not worth spending that much money on a knife this early in your knife obsession.

As you said, new to the knife world. You will not be able to appreciate customs and high dollar knives as well as you will one day in the future. Trust me, I know from experience. It took me forever to stop hating myself for buying a damascus inlayed Chris Reeve Sebenza near the start of my obsession. So many knives I could have gotten with that money... Now that my collection is vast and I have become educated on knives, I can happily spend large sums of cash on a single knife.

I think all three are/will be great knives. They will all also have their own place in the knife world. The Hinderer is a great knife just bit small for me. You'll find that secondary market for Hinderer is almost twice what he charges. Really can't get into the other two as all I have done is drool over pictures and watch videos. I like my cryo I a lot and preordered the cryo II based on that. At the price I will use it as a beater. Like the Hinderer 3", I think the 566 will be a little small for me. Have to handle one first. Maybe you should play around with a cryo I now and see how you like it. It will be a fair representation on the cryo II just smaller.

Or just buy all three.

....

What you're calling the inflated price is actually the retail price. The price that Rick sells direct to military, LEO, etc is actually the wholesale price.

Am I asking too soon for compared pictures about the Cryo II and ZT 0566, since they aren't even available atm...
I'll just get the Cryo II as a beater then save up for the ZT 0566 and maybe eventually a True Hinderer.

This statement is not true...my retail price is $385.00 for the XM-18 and $550.00 for the XM-24 for everyone including Mil/LE/Fire....I sell these at the shows for this price...the higher prices you are seeing is the aftermarket prices...I do not sell wholesale to individual LE/Mil/Fire

What I was referring to was the dealers who buy from you to mark up and sell to the general public. Sorry I wasn't clear, said wrong.

Several years ago I purchased two XM18's from Ryan at Blueline Gear for $350.00 each.
But now dealers like M**t D Tac***al has the XM-18 at $795.00 and XM-24 at $899.00, no where close to those $385 & $550 prices.
Pla*a wants $875.00 for an XM-18
Monk*y Depo* $895.00 for an XM-18

I saw one dealer recently had production 24's at $1099. And he was sold out!

One day I'll own a Hinderer and I don't care how much it costs. Knives bring me joy not money.

I'm still somewhat new to knives, but if that's what you sell them for, why are they eveywhere else for almost double?

Thanks for the clarification, Rick... now, when/where is the next show you'll be attending? ;)

What is a 0566? I've heard of 0560's and 0561's, are 0566's similar?

So it is not for sale yet? Well, the OP should buy a knife that is actually for sale, like a 0550 or 0560. Just my opinion. Lots of experience with those, feedback from owners.

I have owned an XM-18 3" for quite a while now, paid an exorbitant amount from an authorized Hinderer dealer, and use or fondle it virtually every day. To me, it is worth what I paid. Maybe I'm rationalizing, but the knife has a value to me that justified the price. Where I live, you could blow that much on a dinner for four quite easily. But the knife is still around.

The 0566 is going to be a smaller, cheaper, stainless framelock, assisted version of the 0560, basically.

Seriously. When will You be at a knife show near Philly next? I'm prepared to make the leap, but not at the inflated price. If I'm gonna pay that much I'd much rather know its going to the maker and not some vendor.

Demand exceeds supply at the retail price. Simple.

Demand is partially being met by both collaboration knives and competitors, although those probably also *increase* demand for the "original." I suspect that the collaborations are, at least in part, motivated by the need to undermine the counterfeit industry. I own a ZT 0561 and a Cryo, and have a preorder on the ZT 0566. I'd still buy an XM if I could find him at a show in the DC/Ballmer area. I also own a Spyderco Southard, which I see as a worthy competitor at a decent price point.
