Any one have any experience with the Cold Steel Assegai spear? I don't know, barring guns, I can't imagine a much more formidable defense than a stout 3 foot spear with a foot of blade, especially in a hallway of your house. They claim to made to bend rather than break. Whadda ya' think?

Ciao, John

Hmm...anything that's in your house could probably be defeated more easily with a baseball bat than a spear. Or an ASP baton. Or one of those huge Hossom bowies you see around. Spears are cool though.

Don't get me wrong, Chief, I'm a big fan of the Louieville slugger. Carry one in my car, along with a glove and ball. But, try swinging one in the hallway or backed into a corner. Seems to me that a short staffed spear is like a Bowie, up close, but can be more effective than a sword a 2-3 feet. And talk about intimidating!

As far as I'm concerned, the spear is one of the best weapons for defense/ofense in almost any situation. With proper training, it offers a big advantage over any other hand held non projectile weapon. The assegai is awesome! The short length makes it easy to weild in the limited space of a home. The size of the head makes it a very versatile weapon. It is equally suited for choping as well as thrusting. Picture having a baseball bat with a foot long double edged blade at the end. Not too shaby

Welcome to BFC Bikehunter!!

I've never personally handled any of these CS spears but I have seen the CS propaganda video "Proof".

If you haven't already seen this, and you are interested in purchasing a spear from CS, then this is a absolute must for you to view.

I guarantee that you'll be ordering before the end of the movie.

Thanks, everyone for the info and welcomes. I think I'm going to buy one of these things and test it out myself. My catalog is almost a year old, but they used to give you a free video with purchases over 25 bucks.

Thanks again. This list is great!

I have one myself actually, for the price it's great! Just took an old mop or broom handle stuck it on thumped on the butt end like when you're reseating an ax head, a weapon to be reckoned with.

I've a friend who has one of CS's spears. I forgot the name, but its the short boar hunting spear. It's his "house" defense weapon(once he runs out of bullets). I was thinking of getting a Bushman and sticking it on a handle. A cheap spear.

I have an Assegai, and would not even begin to question how awesome it would be if I had to fight my way to a gun. The wife won't let me keep it in the bedroom though.

Yah, those Assegai spears are pretty cool, and would make a pretty fair "house-weapon", but they do seem to be a little "limited" in their use in that role.

Actually, those do seem like they'd do a number on your home-invader types. Hadn't really thought about getting a good swing in the confines of the hallway- its more of a living room/ dining room type deal. In the hallway a spear might be just the thing...

My original question was mostly concerning performance. That is, quality of materials, did anyone ever break one, stuff like that. I've pretty well decided that in the confines of a house, what would be better, other than a gun, naturally? What do you mean by "limited" Glockman? Limited in what way? It can be used in close quarters like a large knife, yet you can strike at 3 ft. I would think that it would be extremely difficult to disarm a person with a good grip on a 3 ft. shafted spear, unless the attacker was very well trained. Thrusting power would be much greater than a knife of the same blade length. Help me think of some disadvantages (I mean besides your wife not letting you keep it in the bedroom). Hide it from her. Hang it blade up, in it's sheath from your closet pole?

John

The only real downfall to using a knife or a spear for self defense in a house( I know I'll take some flak for this one but its sad in our world that this is true) is that it isn't socially prescribed. That is, our society would rather see us shoot someone than stab them. Or, even worse, not do anything at all as opposed to slashing or stabbing. In my hones opinion, if some S.O.B should enter my house I would love to tie him/her up and teach them a lesson. Unfortunately, I have to think about the consequences involved. That is why I would prefer a shotgun since the "brutality" involved would go over easier with the authorities than stabbing someone. Even a baseball bat I think would be better. In my car I have a 6 D cell maglite that can double as a bat if I really needed it. Just be careful about what you use for a weapon in self defense. In our litigious society, it is possible for the intruder to sue you for using a spear on him.
