I am going to get a new folder this month. I am considering about 100.00 and will most likely choose a Spyderco, Kershaw or Cold Steel. This will be for all general EDC work.

Over the years I have lost track of what CS offers in a 3 1/2- 4 1/2 inch blades but the Spartan comes to mind along with the Ultimate Hunter. What else is available? I also have a few older good quality Gerbers.

Thanks for the link. Would the AUS 8 normally be the better steel than the VG-1?

Get a Recon1. A very very good folder. I own a few of them and they have stood up to everything I have used them for and my son has used them for, and he really really uses them hard. keepem sharp

UDTJIM , I just scored my second Kershaw Zing , well under $100 and worth every penny.

What about a Zing ? :) Not poopin on Cold Steel , just offering an alternative.

Also, check out the AK 47. I just got a G10 version and i'm impressed with the build quality, factory edge is one of the sharpest i've seen and the overall package is bomb proof. I paid less than $60 for mine on the exchange, worth that and then some.

I would normally say that AUS-8 is nothing to write home about. But of the Cold Steel knives I have, all being AUS-8, none have presented me with a bad edge at a less than desirable time.

Cold Steel does some things with AUS-8 that other producers do not, such as dipping in Liquid Nitrogen for some time. I cannot say what the difference is, but their AUS-8 beats others by a large margin. I've been carrying and using the Large Espada since I bought it about two months ago, and have not had to sharpen it yet.

Is that good or bad? You tell me.

udtjim, if you haven't handled an Ultimate Hunter, you are in for a surprise, as it is one of the heaviest duty folders I have ever seen. Top that off with a great design and you have a winner. The Recon 1 and Voyager series are nothing to sneeze at either.

I don't know what you are looking for, but I just received a Spyderco Manix 2 and it is hard to beat at its price. I don't think anything from Cold Steel comes close. The Kershaw Tyrade does, though...

Thanks Tostig

I did notice that some of those CS folders did have a faux axis lock or it appeared so. Anyone know what's up with that?

CS tried to get a patent for a design that turned out being too close to the Axis. This stuff happens.

It was/is legit, as CS has had to pay to use the design.

how about a ZT0350? can get a new one for very close to 100 from kershawguy, or a blem model for ~85...

Where's the cheapest place to buy one please?

I'd like the G-10 and I'm leaning toward the plain edge Tanto, as I like a plain edge and their clips points are a little over done for me. At least in the Voyagers.

I liked the spear point but it had the darn serrations, too bad, that would have been an awesome plain edge offering.

I found a Tanto, plain edge at Blade HQ for $76 + shipping, are they a good company?

Thanks!

If I had 100 dollars to spend I would personally be looking for something in a better steel than aus 8 unless I was going to save some cash.

at 3.5-4" from spyderco, kershaw or cold steel you might look at the endura 4 g-10. I don't really like cold steel's knives, but I'm trying to be as constructive as possible so I might recommend the ultimate hunter if you can get one at around 50 dollars. At 70 dollars, Im not sure I am keen on even that.

The CS recon 1 will be a very solid knife. Check on the web for a good price, and make sure you check the feedback here before you order. You can order directly from CS, but go to ltspecpro.com instead of coldsteel.com

both are their sites, but the first one is cheaper on most their stuff. I have no idea why they do that.

The Aus8 steel is decent. Holds an edge well. It is not a super steel. but I have never had any issues with it. I had their trailmaster in sanmai III, and that vg-1 held an edge for a really really long time. Basically most of their folders are going to be tough at a decent price.

I have carried my Recon1 for quite a few years.

I just picked up one of their pocket bushman knives. Cheap, but really cool design. I have been carrying it around and leaving my much more expensive knives at home, because it is so fun. It is basically a locking Douk-douk copy. The lock will hold 300lbs. Knife is only $30 (however, not a fast knife to close. you can open it one handed pretty quick once you break in the action, but the lock takes two hands to close).
