which would be better for chopping of a fishes head.

i like to fish but i also hate watching them suffer soim gonna try chopping their heads off quick and clean the local surplus store has a couple models of cold steel machete and the ever popular ontario machete. i figure it would be easy to chop a fairly large sized fishes head off in one or two strikes the golox seems to have a nice forward weight and a fair thickness for a machete, i havent handled an ontario machete but they seem well regarded.

thanks for the info.

Either one is equally capable of removing a fish head--it's not seasoned oak or anything. Go with whichever one seems to fit you best. :)

42B i liked your response but i want something i can use for things besides fish heads i was dissapointed with my gerber gator machete because the handle loosened and the blade bent and rolled granted i dont think i should have been hitting 3-5 inch thick branches with it but still.... i was just dissapointed.

The Cold Steel machetes come with a stupid label stuck to the
side. I'd go for the Ontario.

If you like the CS and have about a half hour to kill trying to get the label
off, go with it. Me, I'll go with another brand.

Get a sharp nail or pointy object and insert it into the fish's brain. You'll have an entire fish with no mess andthe death will be instantaneous

Between the two machetes I find Ontario to be a much better producer. In general if you're looking for something highly functional and inexpensive get a Tramontina. If you're looking for the best of the best, go with Condor. :)

Yep stupid is as stupid does as Forest always says. Just get some wd40 for the label if it bugs ya if not just let it wear off. Either I would assume would serve you well. keepem sharp

gonna need to take the fishes head off anyways. and the pier im gonna be using has a stand to clean the fishes on anyways. i havent gotten to fish and subsequently cean a fish in years dont fully remember how to be quite honest but i certainly know the hed and tails come off..

This would also be a good economical option and would also be able to accomplish the rest of the cleaning/gutting process. :)

use nail polish remover.

Sure, if you're that much into Cold Steel machetes. My attitude is, why should I have to buy nail polish remover or use WD40 (which I also have no use for) when I can simply buy a better product without one? The label is even more easily burned off, again, if you want to go through the trouble.

If they put those same labels on Cold Steel knives, we'd never hear the end of it on this forum. It's the principle.

BTW, I forgot to mention it, but the Cold Steel Warhead is a good knife that might suit your purpose. It's double bladed and sharp as flint.

Wow this went from machetes at the the local surplus store to "get a mora" i dont quite know how that happened

:D Sorry if I threw a wrench in the works there. If you're still looking for a good general-use machete it's still real hard to go wrong with a Tramontina. I just thought the Mora might be able to take of the head AND do everything else. ;)

Again with the label whine?
Cheese and crackers, it's a label.
You can handle it.

I kill the fish I'm going to keep by cutting them just behind the gill plates from the spine straight down thru the fish. They bleed out and die quickly, mercifully.

If you must chop the head off, I'd recommend batonning the ontario machete thru the fish like my fish monger does.
Actually he uses a Dexter Russell Fish Splitter

Swinging a machete at a slippery, flopping fish surely seems like an accident waiting to happen.

For Machete's, I usually suggest Ontario, Tram, and then Cold Steel. I will say that the Tram and the Cold Steel are close in performance, but - the Tram's are usually cheaper. However sheaths are more readily available for the Cold Steel and Ontario. Hope that helps. I have done a fair amount of machete work lately in the back yard trimming the hedges. Neighbors love it.

The label on my CS Heavy machete peeled right off. Either way, not a big deal.

Guys, the label creates drag and reduces overall cutting ability when I'm clearing light vegetation and brush. Very disappointing.

I would not buy another Cold Steel machete, period.

You make some excellent points. i see the inherent safety hazard but im gonna try it and if it does prove to be more difficult than first thought ill switch to your method.

42 dont worry about it it comes with the territory. but i have a million knives and i already used this trip as an excuse to get a new knife (my 3rd rc-4 :D ) so im gonna use that rc-4 come hell or literal high water. im sure i have a fillet knife somewhere so the mora is outclassed anyways...

Normally im one of the first people to bitch about cold steel but its their business ethics that bother me... i feel bad sometimes when i get their products but i have about 3 of them at this point and really im not gonna get rid of them off a small lapse of morals on the part of a company, i certainly am not going to go out of my way to justify it, i dislike alot of things about cold steel but nevertheless if they have a product that outclasses the other things in the price range then i will go with that because in that way they do deserve business the way id buy abetter car for the same price or less than a competitors its their fault they make shitty cars.

but back to topic can i gt a consensus on the two machetes i wanted to hear about? ontario army issue or cold steel goglok im not net surfing im picking one of the two up at a surplus store so recommending other things will not help. for what its worth i do wish the store carried tramontinas but i dont have the time to wait for a package and im not going to expedite shipping on a 15 dolar machete.
