CS Hawk for bushcraft survival

hahaha, you make an excellent point... its not which one you want but which one to get first.. oh and also.. i still plan on bringing an ESEE-6 knife with the tomahawk.

and I have second thought about the need for a hammer back.. never had one before.. and the blade edge of the Frontier and pipe are really close.

I'll find a dealer today and may order 2.. maybe a frontier/trail combo ..

BladeForums is by far, the most expensive forum I ever subscribed.. with all knife, gadget, machete, and now hawks... what's next!!

If you don't need the hammer, then you can save some weight.

Taking a knife the size of the ESEE-6, I'd have no trouble with taking the Trail hawk.

I've seen pics here of guys that bobbed the hammer almost off of the Trail Hawk as well, and those look interesting.

Frontier/Trail would give a good indication of where to go, preference-wise from there.

How is the trail boss supposed to be inferior to those others mentioned? I'm curious.

I like the Trail Boss. I think it is a good tool. With some work, I don't think you can find a better 3/4 axe for under $30. Its closest competitors all come in at over twice the price.

There are two problems with the Trail Boss that you have to consider though. The balance is not great. The bit is much heavier than the poll, which effects the accuracy during use. The edge is also a bit thick. With some filing you can get it to perform quite well. The steel is failry hard.

It's not the best axe out there, but it's fairly good. It is made at the exact same place as the hawks. I did a short review of it here.

Do the CS hawks come with sheaths? I'm not seeing the sheaths in my CS catalog.

You know what, its a very good point, ordered 2 hawks yesterday, didnt even think about a sheath.. and its a must have!

And even if its included, i guess its gonna probably suck or be cheap. I have seen leather masterpieces sheaths for hawk in this forum .. I really need to find a hawk sheath dealer!

No, they don't come with sheaths.

I think CS is going to sell some cheap sheaths maybe later this year.

I have a rifleman's hawk but if your main use for it is gonna be to chop down trees then get the biggest one, the trail boss.

like i said earlier in this thread, it is obvious that the axe is gonna out-chop a hawk but i dont plan to process wood for a living. I mainly want to have fun chopping with a lightweight version of an axe (hawk). It will chop better than a simple knife.

I have seen on the coldsteel web site their stock sheath was back order. And since you seem to know way more than i do on the subject, do you happen do know a store or a member that sell good ones.. something to get on my belt, or just good leather one, kydex, anything ?

Once again thank you everyone for your input.. i got everything do discover regarding the hawks.. i'll get my first two in hand tomorrow night :D (i got a whole thread about modding to read now)

Which two did you buy?

I choosed lightweight (Trail Hawk)
and i picked Bigger edge for chopping (Frontier)

Today is Tomahawk day for me! :D:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I have a little regret about not getting the pipe hawk.. loosing ¼inch of edge over the Frontier but getting my hammer and bigger chopping power. I slowly became a gram police on my backpacking gear so the Trail will do just fine.. but I'll give a go on the Frontier first on the soon to come survival trip.. Guess what im gonna order next! [geez.. a 3rd Tomahawk now ??]

Doc, it's funny that you choose as you did because I was mulling over the same thing and have reached the same conclusion.

spent 3 days non-stop-thinking about the best choice to be sure and still, i failed at being 100% satisfy with my choice.. im glad i ordered them but i can see a pipe hawk too in the near futur :D

No matter what happen, im using them all .. they will each have a go in the canadian wilderness .. that will be my true test

GB small forest axe or a good sized serious bow saw. I've seen it get down to -45\50 around here. Toss in a three day blizzard....... Depending on the region and how far north you are going, you will be playing with your life if you only have a hawk. Northern Indians use chainsaws and consider an axe a back up tool. A hawk may get you killed.

not life threatning at all around those temp... we are used to it.

Actually, I just read the other thread here saying that CS is coming out with cheap sheaths. . .

I really don't know who makes good sheaths. When I had CS hawks, I just made cardboard and duct tape sheaths for them.

Sorry buddy, I didn't see your location. I thought that you might have been one of those guys from the deep south, that read a book, then decided to live in an abandoned bus with a bag of rice. ;) Have fun.

well muthafreakin' Fedex lost my 2 hawks.. thats just fantastic! Great F#ing night.. youpidou!

Everytime there is something with those guys

Sorry to hear that, man.

How long does it take to get things sorted with FedEx?

I called twice yesterday, said to me I can pick up at the closed pick up location 30min drive from my house. I stood there for 1hr30min for them to never find my package, telling me they have lost it some where.

I stood there yelling for 1hr30min for 2 tomahawks! Thats how much I wanted those! The seller was 200km from my house, and was charging around 30$ for shipping with Canada Post.. its been later switched for Fedex at lower price.. but hell of a lot lower service quality :barf::jerkit::barf:.. and then.. here come the manager to calm me down.. well, enough said.. they made a deal with me before i broke something and came back empty handed. Love those Hawks!!
