Gonna pick up a CS Hawk tonight. I'm leaning strongly towards the Rifleman in a choice between it and the Trail. Any opinions? Good, bad of each? The Rifleman looks like it would be more useful, having a wider edge and all, but I see a lot of love on the forums for the Trail.

I just got the Trail hawk and like it a lot, it chops much more than it ought to be able to. I don't have the other.

I'd just go for the one you like. If you start modding it, you'll end up getting addicted and buying more anyway. :D

Teaser pics for fun:

By the way, where in KY are ya at?

I have been looking into getting one for a while. I am looking at the Trail Hawk version. Since I don't have first hand experience with either so my opinion doesn't really matter but just from the looks I like the trailhawk.

Me and a friend both have the Rifleman Hawk and my brother has the Trail hawk. Me, nor my friend, were too happy with our Riflemans hawk. The metal seems too soft. While camping my friends decided to shoot mine with a low powered BB gun and it put dings in the side. During normal usage of splitting wood, my friend's hammer poll broke off! How in the world does that happen!?!? My bro seems pretty happy with his Trail hawk but the only thing he uses it for is to scrape the bows he makes as a hobby. If the metal was the same (maybe me and my friend got one not heat treated correctly?) I would go with the Rifleman Hawk just because of the cutting edge size and weight compared to the smaller and lighter Trail Hawk.

+1 for the trail hawk... they're are great woods tools, as well as amazing throwers... you can't go wrong for the price either...:D

I just bought a Trail Hawk. I read a lot of posts and that seems to be the favorite CS model of most people. A big consideration is how you'll be using it and how much you'll be carrying it, since the Rifleman is quite a bit heavier and larger. Also, just because a blade edge is longer doesn't necessarily mean it will be a better chopper than one with a shorter length, although the added weight of the Rifleman could be an advantage. The nice thing is that these tomahawks aren't real expensive. I doubt if I'll be satisfied with just one. :)

Spooky, nice-looking TH!

I like the length of the cutting edge and the look of my frontier hawk myself.

The trail hawk is a close second, though, I like the hammer poll on it.

I went with the Trail Hawk. Picked up a couple more Moras while I was at it. Like I needed more ;).

I would go trail hawk...for the weight of a rifleman's hawk, you can get a much, much better axe! At least the trail hawk is nice and light, so you aren't packing around something "weight-expensive" for the utility.
