CS Recon 1 + Emerson CQC 8 = ???

Sick looking folder - wow!

A.D. is supposed to build my custom this week or next. Nothing that radical but I'm sitting on my hands and checking my email all the time waiting to hear from him.

Thanks guys! and cziv, I know how you feel, I was on pins and needles for months!

After a decade of barehand martial arts I'm new to knives. Coincidentally these are the exact two knives I've gotten my shortlist down to. I've just gotten the Recon1 in Tanto and Clip and was looking to order a CQC8. I didn't realize that a custom knife was a possibility and, while I know this will be expensive, do you think Mr. Demko would consider doing the EXACT same knife for me? If so could you get back to me with contact info? It would be very much appreciated.

Dumbo, I actually don't think it is possible.. due to the fact that Mr. Demko has told me he is no longer doing reblades. Well if you want a full on custom knife from him (instead of just a custom blade) he can probably do it, but his waitlist is over a year and you are looking at the 400 smackaroos range.

Welcome to bladeforums though! and both the Recon 1 and the CQC8 are excellent knives, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either.

Let me know if you have any more questions

That's too bad because I'd pay $400 just for the one he did for you (to save myself owning a bunch of blades, none of which quite fit my purpose). A good compromise for me would be to have the recon1 fitted with the Cold Steel wave stud. Do know if that's even possible or who might do it?

Also, does anyone have any idea how long I might be waiting to find an Emerson Super CQC8 on line? If it's unlikely I'll ever find one I'll grab an standard 8.

Go over to the knifemakers section. I'm sure you can find someone to wave the Recon-1 for you. As a lifelong practitioner of "open hand martial arts" as well as weaponry, I think I can suggest and we can agree that the first to arrive with the most will usually prevail - all other things being equal.

I say this because Andrews customs weigh a ton - like two ZT301's taped together and wouldn't be my choice as a self defense weapon in reality or practice. Buy a Spyderco Military if you want to be fast and lethal. That's what it was made for. If you just want a super fast opening pocket knife then have at it with a possible mod of the Recon-1 :)

I'll check out the knifemaker's forum. I think clean fast deployment is essential but I also think one wants/needs the securest locking mechanism possible. That said, a waved Recon 1 Tanto would be just about perfect for self defense (if it wasn't for the type of steel).

BTW. I got a Spartan just for laffs and it is awesome. In fact I'd be happy with it if it wasn't for the fact that I occasionally miss waving it open (though I've only played with it a couple of hours). The problem is that, if it doesn't wave open, you virtually need two hands to finish the job.

What exactly do you think you know about AUS 8 that allows you to make such a bold statement? Do you believe that AUS8 is inadequate in a SD scenario?

Try $500+ and almost a year wait.

Necrothread...smells of mall ninja.
/shiver

I think it's fine but, given a choice, I'd prefer something that holds an edge a bit better (giving the knife more general purpose functionality). Like I said, a waived Recon 1 tanto would be just about perfect.

oh well if you are willing to shell out that kind of money you can probably get it done.. email me at rz4z@virginia.edu and i will give you his email

btw as far as waving any tip-up carry knife, all you gotta do is use a couple pliers/screwdrivers/torxscrews and remove the thumbstud and thread a ziptie through it

like such:

btw, AUS8 with a decent heat treat is actually quite a fun steel.. it takes a very very fine edge and holds it okay

If Emerson upgraded to the Triad lock, their knives would be the best tactical folders on the planet.

A CQC-8 with a conventional (non-chisel) grind would be great for me. I do like all of my 8s (Horseman, Regular [my birth year s/n] and Super) but chisel grind doesn't suit my purposes so well. Couldn't see your pics.
