Im shopping for a good all round field blade that is small enough (7in range) to carry on an LBE comfortable, and won't get in the way if running, jumping, climbing, etc. Im considering the Recon Scout its a thick tough knife that will perform what I need it to do and I won't have to break down and cry if I break it, lose it, or FUBAR it. A Kabar would probably suffice ( I already have a few) but something thicker and heavier would be preferable. I would probably replace the sheath w/ kydex. Any Opinions?

After years of using Ka-Bars in the field I am looking very seriously at "moving up" to the Fallkniven A1. It isn't all that expensive at places like discount knives. I don't know if it is thicker than a Kabar or a Recon Scout, but it is probably tougher than either if Cliff Stamp's tests of the A1 are any indication.

I was also considering the coated version of the fallkniven A-1! Nice knife by all accounts! The price is surprisingly reasonable as well.

This one comes up often......try a search for earlier stuff.
I traded mine off......it was the heaviest and most cumbersome knife of its class that I have handled. It is possible that edge geometry varies from batch to batch, but mine had the thickest edge I have ever seen on a knife...any knife. I would not want to carry one for long just so I would have a prybar in the unlikely event that I needed one.

Which knife are you talking about?

For the 7 inch category I would look at the Busse Basics #7 before the recon scout. I had a Recon Scout and really disliked the grip. Just got the Busse and prefer its balance and feel to the RS. Much of this is personal preference, but the Busse seems like a nice pack knife.

I have a Fallkniven F1 and am going to get the S1 as a larger knife for more routine belt wear and leave the Busse for camp use.

just my $0.02 worth!

Isn't that what the question was about ?

Sorry,

My fault. I tend to read the posts like a conversation and damn the title. It was unclear to me whether your criticism was about the CS or the Fallkniven.

I just got my CS recon scout this summer and am impressed with it, as were my buddies. I didn't get to camp much this year, so I haven't used it to much...deer season is coming...One thing to consider, it is pretty heavy for a 7" blade. I don't know if I'd want to carry it around on a pistol belt all day (without the suspenders), I usually keep it in/on my pack and have my little sharpfinger on my belt. Try it, you'll like it!
