CS Recon Tanto for Survival Knife?

It's not the knife that makes an outdoorsman...a tanto would work just fine depending on the size and your activities. Tanto's get a bad reputation from a lot of outdoorsmen, however I think it's more of a dislike of non-traditional outdoors knives, that's understandable though. I will admit it's not the best for some activities, but you can learn to work around that. I won't comment on CS quality, some are fine others are not so much. If I was handed a Recon Tanto out in the wilderness, I wouldn't toss it away because it had no place out there...you could do much, much worse.

I have a CRKT stiff kiss neck knife with a chisel ground tanto blade that I love. It takes a wicked sharp edge, cuts very well, has a super sharp tip and is overall a handy little utility knife. One thing I found is that the tanto is basically 2 edges that meet, the corner where they meet is really handy for a lot of things, like laying things down and cutting straight lines like you would do with a safety knife. I have never skinned anything with it but I think it would work fine if that is all you had.

The CRKT is the only tanto I have ever owned so I can't really speak on the cold steel. Chris

I think almost any knife can be used. I had a kabar tanto for a long time and used it almost all the time. Beat the hell out of that knife and passed it off to a friend of mine for his wife. I am pretty sure she liked it as well. Just my .02 bud.

I am currently doing research on traditional Japanese knives. What did the Samurai use to gut their food with when traveling? How did they use their knives in the outdoors? I think questions like that are worth researching seeing that I am taking a tanto out into the wood next week. Thanks for your input everyone. I'll share with you what I find.

The first thing you'll find is that the 'tactical' tantos of today are bit different than the tantos of feudal japan.

I did a little research myself. Googled "traditional japan hunting knife."

Nothing that looked like a CS Recon Tanto. Lots of knives with plenty of belly.

Kind of like traditional American hunting knives.
