Hiya,

I was doing some research yesterday and came across this review of the SK-5 Trail Master.

This dude sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

What do you guys think? This knife can be had for under $100.

Seems like it should be more popular around here?

They are a very good knife and I have seen several reviews and not a bad thing said about them. That said, The Kabar Heavy Bowie is every bit the knife and quite a bit less money. I went that route. JMO

Really, even less than that? Geez...

Damn.... I must admit I like the ergos of the TM though. I have a San Mai one that I got off the exchange here, but I never took the cheaper one that seriously until I saw that review...

Now I got one coming too :D

I've always dug nutnfancy's reviews. He seems to give an honest review. The stuff doesnt have to be uber spendy or custom or made in USA for him to be honest about it. If he likes what he uses he will say that. He has a ton of knife reviews, both table top and in the field. I look forward to his updates!

Indeed. He reviews the Kabar too!

Yeah, I like his style... I'm watching him review the Emerson CQC8 right now. Its one of my favourites too!

I have to say I always loved the Carbon V Trailmasters and was wondering how the new steel was in them.

I heard the Trailmasters come from the same factory as all the Fällkniven knives. Can anyone confirm this?

Yeah, I'd definitely take my kabar bowie over that. Handle on that looks too thin, and I hate guards (especially top guards). Blade shape is fine looking.

For some reason I couldn't get the audio in the youtube review posted above, so I can't comment on it. I do have an old CarbonV Trailmaster, satin finish, not sure if it's 2nd or 3rd generation or what... anyway it was made before they started putting the black finish on the blade. So I can comment on the general design.
Short version: it's a good basic knife, I've beaten the dickens out of mine and it has held up great. Obviously a little big for spreading peanut butter, but I'm one of those who prefers too much knife rather than too little. I always carry a smaller knife for more delicate tasks, anyway.
Some peeves: 1) the clip-point design is highly debatable for a wilderness knife, IMHO. And if you're going to put a clip on it to make it a more effective fighter, why the devil wouldn't you SHARPEN it?!? I re-ground mine so the clip actually cuts. 2)The handle sucks. Hard. I've heard horror stories of the Kraton material coming loose and twisting around the tang. But even if that's BS, I just didn't like the ergonomics of it, like someone else mentioned. It felt like like it was trying to leap out of my hand when I swung it. So I tore it off and fashioned a traditional-style bowie handle for it. I also made a new, smaller guard out of N/S, but that's mainly because I think brass is just ugly.
I should point out that the sheaths are well-made; I was lucky to pick a couple extras up from Smoky Mountain for use with other projects.
Just my two-cents' worth; wish I heard the review because I too am curious about the "new" steel...

I guess its really not designed for that exclusive purpose. Its a bowie knife after all, so its got multiple purposes...

i would think, as mentioned, the ka-bar heavy bowie would be a better knife in that class. a faelkniven S1 would definatly be tougher, sharper and less corrosion resistant, and new, their isnt mush of a price difference if i recall correctly

theres my rehandled TM in Carbon V

The TM has been on my wishlist for months now, but I got the Ka-Bar instead. Money is an important factor...:D The handle on the Heavy Bowie is really comfortable, whereas there seem to be a lot of people out there (and in this thread), that have modified the handle of their TMs. So both are great knives and one of them might need some work to be really comfortable. The TM remains on my list nonetheless...^^
