I have never had this problem before. The blade is locked tight in the open position. Any ideas? Thanks to all.

Interesting. Can you depress the lock? If not I would bet that there is something jammed in it.

If you can't find anything wrong with the spring, I know I've seen the lock stick on more than one Spartan. When I say stick, I mean STICK. BreakFree CLP will remedy the issue.

Examine the spring to make sure nothing appears out of place, and if it is just the lock sticking, use something to get more leverage like the corner of a workbench. Line up the lock release with the corner of the bench and push. That should get it to release. Then lube it with BreakFree and work the lock a bit.

It happened to my Recon 1. I got it closed, finally. Tried again. Stuck again. Got it closed, sent it to customer service. It came back better than before.

Glad to hear customer service is good. I may have to do that if this doesn't cooperate

"tri ad lock" is a marketing term for a lock back knife. And coldsteel does a bad job with theirs. I can't tell you how many cold steel folders I have worked on that have the same problem. I suggest you save up some money and buy a good knife =]

That's odd, the ~20 triad folders I own never gave me any problems, and this is the first I heard about it malfunctioning.

People are hard on Cold Steel CS but honestly I don't know why personally. I've only used them once but they were totally fine. I called up and said - This knife is near stuck open, the detent is insane, and I stripped a screw trying to fix it. The guy told me to send it in with a note. 3-4 week turnaround, came back fine. I called 3-4x to see if the knife was "checked in". It didn't get checked in for 3 weeks. Once it got checked in, it was back to me within 3 days.

I don't own a lot of Cold Steel - only a Recon 1. But they didn't give me any hassle whatsoever. No paperwork, receipt, whatever. They were pleasant. Just don't be a dick. I was a little aggravated because I had tracking (and saw that it had arrived for like 2-3 weeks) and they hadn't checked it in. I was worried I was going to get screwed out of my knife. It was all a lot of silly worrying, they just get a lot of knives. I never let it come through in my interactions with them and they treated me right.
