CS Talwar Folder

Well AUS8a kind of sucks at least in my head. But the proof is in the pudding as they say. I don't know how or why this 8a blade steel would be any different than any other even with the 420 on either side but I'll tell ya this Hatamoto is about as sharp as any knife I have ever owned. Go figure. As for the VG steels I think VG1 vs VG10 I think one grade has more vanadium than the other. AUS8a not best and not the worst but definetly not a 400 dollar knife steel. Knife kicks ass though. keepem sharp

You know what's strange, i agree that AUS-8A is not the most premium steel out there, but for some reason, I can get my AUS-8 steels sharper than my vg-1s. Maybe it's just easier to sharpen, or maybe it's just "smoother" for more hair-popping scary sharp as opposed to "agressivively toothed sharp" that the other steels have (CPM S30V etc).

My AK47s and aus-8 ti-lite were sharper than my vg-1 voyager tanto and titanium vg-1 ti-lite.. go figure.

On the other hand... my CS Finn Bear which is uber-cheap and made of Krupp steel is scary scary sharp and strops really easily. Maybe with cold steel, the cheaper the steel, the sharper it is ???? i dunno.

I consider AUS8 to be a very decent steel, easily capable of being sharpened to the "scary" classification. AUS8 just doesn't stay sharp as long as some of the more "premium" steels, but that doesn't stop me from using it.

Regarding VG-1 vs. VG-10, I believe Cobalt (lack thereof in VG-1) is one of the major differences between the two classes of steel.

If you look at their catalogue, some of their knives just say San Mai III (Hatamoto, Black Sable, etc) These are AUS-8 core.

There are some that say VG-1 San Mai III, which are VG-1 core.

I believe for both the skin is something like 420

Yes, kodeslinger, that is what I've seen as well. I often wondered why Cold Steel chose not to upgrade all of their San Mai III (w/ AUS8 core) blades to VG-1 San Mai, but after seeing what you and Longbow have said, regarding the performance of VG-1 compared to AUS8, I now understand why they didn't. I somehow get the impression that VG-1 isn't the great steel "upgrade" they hyped it to be.

Let me guess, you were away for the last two weeks thinking up your witty retort.

Speaking of your "writing," where did you learn to do it? You mock "the education system," yet, looking at your "writing," you no doubt could benefit from going through it. Remember, it's never to late.;)

That's funny, you of all people making a joke about "spam." Keep up the good work!:D:thumbup:

Let me guess, retorical questions? Its Cool, I do have some sense of humor G. :)

Second what dpimpc said.

Actually, there're a good number of companies that do so, in the folding range you have Spyderco, Benchmade and Kershaw among others.

Got any unbiased studies to back it up?

And what's with the thread necromancy?

Sorry, guess I should've put, IMHO, in that sentence! :)

As for the 2nd question, you would have to ask Cold Steel.
Peace.

my first knife was a vg-1 voyager tanto. I thought it was the shiznit, until I bought a spyderco. The Talwar looks drool-worthy but for the price (like 400$?) I don't think I Will buy it unless I get a big bonus or anything. I could buy 3 Militaries or 3 Manixes etc with better steel, just as strong a lock, and more practical use.

Heck I could buy a Military in S30V, D2, and BG-42 or S90V (sprint runs).

Oh wait, I already did. :D

To be honest I think the steel ball looks a little silly, anyone?

I've seen the Talwar in the $279 range recently. Much less in cost then going direct from ColdSteel. Very Nice of them to keep their prices High, so their Dealers can benefit in sales. imo:D

Say Heah Guys, I was able to buy two closeout knives, I think they might of been repaired and resold, maybe ? I'm not sure but the drop in price allowed me to buy the two. They both are sharp and I know, The very same day that Santa in his Brown Truck dropped off my Talwar, I was anxious to check it out, It is a beauty, a "Pocket Sword". I just got out of the shower and put on my robe that has a belt, about 3/4 lenght. Anyhow I took it out and for those that own one, It was impressive, I really like the stainless steel ball pommel, I could imagine cracking some nuts with it heh heh heh. Anyhow the box that it came in wasn't that big, I .over from my easychair to the couch by the glass coffee table and sat the knife on it and took it out of the box to further the inspection, Actually I did open the box by the coffee fable, The phone rang, and I should know better, NEVER LEAVE A KNIFE OPENED but I did, When the phone rang which was by the easychair, I went up to pick it up, My robe dragged the knife off tge box and straight into the top of my foot. It cost me three stitches at the E R , I was more careful with my Black Sable when I got it. I did get bit one other time with a dangerously loose sheath my Rold came in, but that's another story., I do love both of those knives. Dies anyone know if the Vintage Talwar and Black Sable have the Triad Locks ?

Don't know the locking system on the Talwar. All I know is that I wish I had one of those nifty folders. They were very well made back in the day. A work of art one might say.

And, sorry about the ER visit.
