Okay guys, help me out here. I keep looking at all the CS Trailhawk posts. There are some great pics of mods, including mustard induced patina. The price is right and they have a certain je ne sais qua, or as we say in American, coolness. These posts make me want to order 1 or 6 or more.

Then I see a lot of posts describing the balde as too thin, the handle as too heavy. I am told it sticks in wood, it is not practical as a wilderness companion, it really is impractical as a weapon, etc. These posts make me want to save my money and get a Wetterlings.

Running the risk of being the "little child" (see, e.g. this version of "The Emperor's New Clothes" http://www.taletown.com/emporer.html) I am compelled to ask:

What is the deal with those CS Trailhawks?

Thanks guys.

MBTull......Go cheap, decide later. Don't put to much emphasis on 'THE' tomahawk but 'THE' Training. The more you work with different hawks over the years you ideas will change. Least it did with me.

Best Dwight

Thanks guys, this helps a lot. I try to spend some time outdoors a couple of times a week. There is a woodlot behind our house. The owner lets me chop wood, so long as it falls within the "By hook or by crook" rule - deadfalls only. I currently use a Gerber Back Pack Ax and a Wally World special pruning saw. I am at the point where I can chop and saw some pretty good sized logs, certainly larger than I would ever use for camping or survival.

The gerber is a good little hatchet. I tend to use it more than any other blade that I carry. It will chop, split (baton method) and carve up kindling. The back is a good hammer. I can use it as a cooking knife and to slice things (hold it like an ulu). It will also dig, pry and scrape, but that really dulls the blade. It carries like a knife and I think that it is more practical than those big choppers that the guys carry on the WSS sub-forum (let's keep that to ourselves so I do not get kicked off over there). I do not like the 8 inch handle.

I read through the trail hawk mod thread last nite. Great stuff and thanks to everyone for the inspiration.

Where is the best place to get a CS Trail Hawk?

Ebay is a good place to start. If you have a local shop with CS hawks for around $30 you could probably try that.
