The Cold Steel 4" Voyager tanto blade is a great knife . I got it two days ago and it is an excellent knife for the money. The grip reminds me of an early spyderco pacific salt model. The blade is sharp as ever, and doubles as a straight razor.

The Voyager has great lockup and is easily opened and closed with one hand. The closing part is done just like a spyderco, where you flick it closed on your index finger and then continue to close once your finger is out of the way. Feels very sturdy, and the knife has zero blade play. This surprised me a little since it is all rivet construction.

The blade is nice and thick all the way up to the point, this makes for a strong overall blade. The tanto tip area is full flat making it extremely strong for piercing tasks (and the lockback seems that it would hold up in a piercing job quite well). The main edge of the blade is either hollow ground or full flat saber ground (both look the same to me). This makes the knife great for slicing tasks and even push cuts.

The handle feels great in the hand and is easy to choke up on. Even feels great in the reverse grip. Great knife for EDC, outdoors, and work. The clip is nice and tight so that lets the user know that it isn't going anywhere.

Excellent product from Cold Steel, my first knife from them, and it won't be my last. I plan on getting the Finn Bear this weekend since it's less than $20.00, can't beat that ;). Kind of an "American Mora."

Let me know what you guys think, J.

i have a five inch version, also tanto point. i've batoned with it, chopped with it, and generally beat the hell out of it. i've never had any issues with the lock, and the edge retention is pretty good.

i have a CS 4 inch gunsite which is basically the same as the voyager with a few minor differences. It is a great knife, very strong, came extremely sharp and it is very easy to carry.

I owned a Vaquero Hombre for a time and it was a superb design for cutting. The steel wasn't the best and I battled to open it with one hand but I think it is a pretty good deal for what you pay.

I have the same Voyager, great knife and it carries well for such a big blade. If the new VG-1 steel is better than the AUS8 I might need to get another.

I like the VG1 steel they moved too. It's a good steel that sharpens easily enough and holds the edge pretty well. Of course Aus 8A takes a good edge also.

It's difficult to say that one is better than another. They both get the job done pretty well. Joe

I also like Cold Steel's move to VG-1.
Takes a great edge and seems to hold it longer than AUS8A.

Sometimes I EDC the medium voyager - when & where its relatively small size and easy replaceability are appropriate.
Mine was very sharp right out of the box, and it's good to see that it's still being made in Japan.

Very nice little EDC for the money IMO.

The Voyager series is the best of Cold Steel's line IMHO. I carried a 3" clip point plain edge in Iraq and used the hell out of it. Absolutely no issues with it and even passed it on to a good friend who was heading over not too long after I got back.

What´s that VG1 steel they use, as I don´t find any info on it?

It's pretty much AUS 8 with a different title and it's made in Japan. Kind of like Spyderco's VG-10, but with 10 times less edge holding ability :D, hence it's called VG-1.

one night , after a lot of alcohol , i decide to try and open a bottle of bourbon with a fully serrated clip point one of these , the knife slipped off the rubber and into my knuckle. being drunk , i looked at the wound and could see fatty tissue sticking out. after the ED trip i threw it in the bin.

My dad always told me - "be drunk or stupid, but not both at the same time"

The Extra Large Voyager Knife from Cold Steel is "the bomb." It is like carrying a sword in your pocket. It doesn't weigh much since the handle is their handle is light. It's the largest blade that I have in a folder. I would definitely recommend this knife. That is until I get a peek of their soon to come Extra Large Espada!? It's an inch or so bigger. I may have to buy bigger pants!

I have one of the tanto point versions that is almost 10 year old. It has held up very well over the years of use it has seen.

I have no complaints about the AUS-8A blade steel, as it holds an edge and sharpens easily for me. I also have several other Voyager models too. The Extra Large clip point is truly a folding bowie!

ere are the specs for VG-1:

Here are the specs for AUS8A:

C Mn Si Cr Ni Mo V W
.75 1.0 1.0 14.5 .49 - .25 -
So there's a good bit of difference between the two steels.

I have several Cold steel knives in VG-1 (including 4 of the Kitchen Series knives), and happen to like the steel a lot.
It' definitely holds its edge longer than AUS8A does, and gets just about as sharp.

I have an X2 Voyager. I love that thing, fairly sharp OOTB and handles well. I have handled the 4" and 5", but the X2 just seems to handle better than either one for some reason. I think it has a lot to do with the handle necessitated by the large blade.

My large voyager with the plain tanto blade just arrived, and that edge is a nice piece of work. It fits in my hand nicely when opened, and is plenty big--I don't know how some of you guys carry the 6" X2 around. Jeez.
