hmmm.. i think what i'll do is head in to the store and check out all the hawks side by side and try to come up with a decision then. i already have the norse hawk from CS so i'll go check out the others.

maybe, it'd be cool if you can bring it on sunday so i can give it a whirl in the field. that'd be mighty nice of ya :D

i think the Cold Steel VN Hawk absolutely sucks with the handle that is on it.

i would go so far as to say it is dangerous and a liability. - the eye is too small, the wood is too weak.

if you must go with a VN-style hawk - i would go with the SOG, which i don't have experience with, but i consider the VN hawks to all be absolute pigs until you mod them.

that said, for perhaps a small amount more, Coal Creek Forge and a few others will make you a perfectly-serviceable spike hawk that will be more reliable and versatile IMHO. the heartburn you will avoiid will be worth it, if nothing else.

i respectfully disagree with a lot of the other advice here, about hawks being melee weapons and all that - they simply haven't owned a real, balanced, lightweight hawk, which will out-transport, out-work and out-fight any knife out there that is shorter than a machete.

again; respectfully! - in a similar vain, a lot of folks think spikes are only for tactical applications - that tells me a lot about their bush skills. - a spike can dig into wet logs and penetrate frozen or rocky ground faster than any bit or poll can, and it saves the bit for other work while making a chisel an unnecessaary hawk accesory for advanced field applications in most instances.

this is why we made the Penetrator Poll on the BUG hawk modifications that we do - the face of the poll is small enough to be a good compromise for a spike modality, while still allowing you to hook and hammer with the poll.

good luck on your decision, brother.

HTH.

interesting bit of info you've put on there vec. more for me to consider.

thanks :D

I wouldn't choose either of them because of their stubby munchkin length handles.

Get one you like from a good maker like Fort Turner, Cold Steel, etc... and put a decent length handle on it.

You can always choke up on a long handle if you need to but you can't make length magically appear if you suddenly need it. I like my handles between 19" to 23" depending on where the handle balances out due to the weight of the head.

That's what I'm gonna do with my LaGana VTAC hawk, send it to vec for one of his Mark V handles about 21/22 inches long.

brethren - first off; good to see you cool cats.

i just got home this a.m. from Sonoma ( - a little spearfishing getaway with the other pirates).

one of the brethren had a SOG tomahawk and it was interesting to note that it doesn't seem to have an eye at all, it has a shank that doubles as a strike plate on both sides of the neck - i thought that was a separate piece until now, having never seen one in person. it's interesting.

i think dollar-for-dollar the stock SOG wins out over the Cold Steel VN variant, but the VTAC heads are a lot sweeter than both of the other ones, from the ones i have put handles on so far, at least....

i still like the Cold Steel VN hawks on my handles. i might have to give some SOG hawks a try for a personal kayaking hawk. - the spike would be great for trekking uneven ground while conserving the bit on a long hawk with that head.

maybe you can empathize with that.

the SOG handle was pretty decent in regards to ergonomics, but it was short and heavy, like the others IMHO. it seems like FRN, which i am not a big fan of. - it'd be cool to see a brother mod their SOG with some tough wood handles; maybe teak or mahogany plywood (?)

slurpy.

I use a CS Norse Hawk a lot in the woods, keep one on my kayak, and bought another to keep in the truck. Easy to sharpen, easy to throw, has held up to all the stuff I use it for.

I would not get either of the 2 hawks you originally asked about. I had the CS Vietnam Tomahawk, brother vec is right, the handle is crummy!!! The head and the sheath are cool, though.

If you want a tactical tomahawk, save up and get a VTAC!!!

i got a chance to try using bushman's cold steel vietnam tomahawk and found the handle real short. gonna keep looking into options. i would splurge on a sibert comanche with the long handle from atc if i had the money.

I like SOG but their hawk offering is poor at best. Head tends to come off quick. Totally wrong for me.
