CS War Hammer

The War hammers are fun!
A buddy and i both bought one a few months back.
Regular paint stripper will take off the black paint.
I stripped mine then patina-ed it with Vinegar and fireblackened then tung-oiled the handle.
Buddy stripped the head on his and stained the handle to look oak-ish.
The war-hammer handle is slightly larger diameter than my modded Trailhawk handle.

As stated above i agree that you could trim the hammer handle to fit a hawk.
A Rifleman's Hawk with a long war-hammer handle would be awesome!

Here's how it looks so far:

I re-stained the handle with Minwax walnut stain, removed the black finish using a vibrating palm sander, and gave it a blotchy patina using H2O2+Vinegar+Salt.

Now it looks like it's been through a couple medieval battles and was stored in a German castle for a few centuries.

You got It looking Great Wolf_1989 ! Yep I did'nt like the Factory Finish on my Cold Steel Hawk's either It had to go, I just used Sand Paper but I'm still working on It, I still have the Rifleman's and the Norse Hawk from Cold Steel, On the Norse Hawk I'm reprofiling the Edge to a Thinner Convex to make a Better Chopper out of It, I think maybe Vec and his Machinest Partner are coming out with a Modified Norse Hawk Real Soon and I cant wait to see that one, Thank's for sharing the picture's of your War Hammer,

I'm adding more patina to it.

The combination of leaving a little bit of the black lacquer on it while patinating it is giving the head this groovy antique cast-iron look. I'm digging it.

I think having an engraver write KRIEGSHAMMER on the langets in some classy german script like Fraktur would look great on this.

Now where are all these zombies people speak of?

OK I think I have it patinated to the degree I wanted.

The head still has some bits of the original black coating here and there. Combined with the brown patina it does indeed resemble an ancient piece of cast iron. The langets patinated very well. I used a mix of hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and salt, and applied it in small treatments using a paper towel. This achieved a natural blotchy look like you'd expect to see on very old steel. The result is a warhammer which looks old but isn't and no surprise to me this finish blends in very well in the woods around here. I cleaned the hammer face of patina using Flitz which left it a dull gun metal grey color. Now it looks like it's actually been used for the last 600 years.

Haven't decided for sure what to engrave on it yet but that will come in time. Maybe it needs to earn a name.

I don't think I need to make any more mods to it. I feel with a piece like this, less is more, and simple utilitarian austerity will speak louder than opulence.

Here it is now:

Wolf, like always you did an excellent job. are you thinking about putting the runes on the langets or the handle?

Most of the langets' surface has browned nicely.

Yesterday I rubbed it down with a clean, dry cloth and was shocked to see parts of it apparently unaffected! There were good sized spots on the langets where the oxidation just wiped right off leaving a nice bright surface.

So I roughed up the areas with a coarser grade of sandpaper and have been trying to patinate with repeated treatments for the last 24 hours with minimal effect.

Note to self: the vinegar+H2O2+ salt method of patination is unreliable.

Maybe I should try bleach, or cut open an old battery or something.

Try citrus -- lemon or lime juice -- the citric acid has been more reliable than vinegar for me. Be SURE to degrease it first.

Try pure apple cider vinegar, coat and let dry, coat and let dry, etc etc.
I did it many many times to the point where i can't stand the smell of the vinegar anymore, lol.
The CS warhammer and the trailhawk seem fairly resistant to patination so it may take some work.
I've patinaed other carbon steel knives with much less effort, the CS hammer and hawk even with paint finish removed, are fairly rust resistant.

i didn't see where you got an answer to this.

the "CS special projects" website.

Thank's for the Link Ron, There price's aint to bad either, I figured Cold Steel would have them but I was trying to find a Cheaper Dealer, But I looked all over and I aint found none so I'll be Ordering from Cold Steel, I noticed they even sell Langette set's for Hawk's also that might go Good with the Long Handle and the Rifleman's Hawk also,

The only effects I've ever been able to achieve with pure vinegar (of any type) or citrus juice is a slightly darkened appearance to the steel.

how would that war hammer go for killing zombies? :)

I bet it would be pretty good. It seems to be intentionally designed for causing massive head trauma, smashing cars, or just destroying anything unfortunate enough to be in its way.

I've had some success adding more patina to the langets today.
