Hello,

I am a cub scout leader and I have a group of eight year old boys who need to earn their whittling chip card. (They will need to use a pocket knife to whittle a 3D figure out of a bar of soap).

Money is tight in our area so I thought I would buys the knives for the boys as Christmas gifts. I need something small, inexpensive with a locking feature.

I found a wholesaler who has some really good prices but know nothing about them. HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF MBIN.COM?

The two knives I am considering are the WT- 1001 White Tail Mini Canoe Worm Groove (Does anyone know if it this one has a lock blade?) and the 322-F-3 3" American Flag Buck Folding Knife.

For the price I don't expect anything too spectacular but if someone could offer an opinion or suggestion I would be very grateful. THANKS!!!!

Thanks fellow Bear leader.... I know nothing about knives but I do have a lot to buy. What is an Opinels and how do I find one?

For good fixed blade knives, whittlers, I would look at Mora knives, good inexpensive price and something they will keep forever. Look here: http://www.ragweedforge.com/511.jpg

Ragnar at ragweed also carries Opinels.

Of course, you're going to have to run this by their parents. People get freaked these days about kids using sharp pointy scissors.

Just search for Opinel on the link provided.

Fixed blades are not allowed by BSA. Ridiculous but true.

I did search the link and that is a great price on the pocket pal ... have you ordered from that company?

Yes BSA has a lot of rules!

When I gave my scouts knives, I had a small ceremony. They know the rules. I made sure at the ceremony to emphasize that home rules regarding knives were entirely up to the boys' parents. I had no complaints.

Yes I already have discussed this with the parents and got unanimous consent. I don't expect any trouble either. Thanks

When I was in the scouts (here we go, another war story ;) ) we carried a lot of stuff that would be illegal today, even for adults. I personally think a small fixed blade is safer than a folder...but we can't fight regulations...just my .02.

Yes ... where was hand sanitizer, car seats and sunscreen when we were kids. By today's standards we are lucky to have lived this long.

The Pocket Pal is a nice knife. I have never whittled with it, but they are very high quality knives. They are made by Victorinox, and have a lifetime warranty. Victorinox, as you probably know, makes Swiss Army Knives. I did have a defect develop in mine, and Victorinox replaced it free of charge, with a new knife, when I mailed my old one in.

pjhull...LOL... I didn't have no sunscreen, hand sanitizers or car seats...had to ride in the bed of a pickup. I look at myself in the mirror every morning (scary) and wonder how I lived so long.

That Pocket Pal is nice and $7.99 is a great price. Go for it! That's a good thing you're doing. eknifeworks is Smoky Mountain Knifeworks. they are a good company to deal with.

pjhull - when I became a Cub Scout my dad presented me with a Swiss Army Knife. A simple one with a large and small blade, bottle opener/screw driver and I think a punch if I remember right. Wish I still had it. I don't know how much those SAK's cost for a basic one, and I guess it doesn't fit your criteria as a locking blade knife anyway.

I will offer a contribution of $15 towards your purchase for those kids if it will help increase the quality of knife you get for them. Let me know if you accept and I'll get it to you.

Chris

Well if you wait until closer to Christmas you might be able to get the Buck 112 knives at Wally world for a great price. Best of luck

You might take a look at the Victorinox Boy Scout Centry. It's a one blade knife that appears to be made as an entry level scout knife. ($9.95 @ knifeworks.com. knifeworks is a great company with excellent customer service. Good luck with your scouts.

I remember the night my Cubs did the whittling chip. I was terrified. I had a couple that I had to keep a close eye on. One was using the top of the blade. I had the boys bring their own knife.I went through all the rules and showed them different sharpeners, and the way to use them. I let them see some of my knives. None of them had any accidents. After it was all said and done someone suggested that we should have used plastic knives. The Ivory soap is pretty soft.
I think it great that you are going to get the boys knives.
