Cub Scout Advice

oilman, thats stand up of you and the crew at new graham. everytime someone asks where to order a knife, i'm telling them this story. thats the kind of good stuff i like to hear after hearing all of the stupid stuff, like ps3, k fed and britney's divorse, the uberstupidity of politicians, etc.

kudos to you and the folks at ng.

The nice thing about the opinels, is the Brevette Lock. It is very positive- no blade movement, since the lock ring is itself a block. It can also be used to lock the blade closed when being toted. It is very simple to manipulate, and there is no spring tension. When I was young (~10-11), I couldn't readily manipulate traditional lock knives due to such. I would recommend a Number 6. It has a descent size, but is still 'friendly small'.

One cavaet- make sure that they are aware that the blade must be locked when they want to cut. There is no backspring to protect them.

PJ,
You need to call Mary Beth at New Graham. She has something for you. Tell her your screen name and she'll hook you up.

Here's New Graham's number: 1-866-333-4445

And it's not a gift, I'm investing in the future voters who hopefully will not allow the further vilification of knives.

I came here to seek advice because I really wanted to do the RIGHT thing and buy a good knife for my scouts. I did not want their first experiences with knives to be frustrating or dangerous.

I got a lot of great advice and support! Everyone was wonderful. Cstorr2004 offered money and Bbigcustom offered his connections and help. I was awed that people cared so much about cub scouts they didn't even know. Especially my little hellions...though I love each and every one of them!!!

Yesterday, I read this posting. It was curiosity that made me call Mary Beth -- I admit that at first I wasn't going to. When I finally did, and hour later, I was floored by what she said to me. She had been waiting for pjhull to call, not even a known person just a screen name. She already knew what I needed and had taken the time to research the knives they carry to find the best possible choice. She recommended the Case Mini Blackhorn Lockback Boy Scout Knife -- a beautiful, quality knife and way out of my budget. BUT then she told me that Oilman had already paid for any 10 knives I chose. I was awed, overwhelmed...

Hours later, after Oilman refused the chance to back out, I worked up the nerve to place the order. I chose the knife that Mary Beth recommended because it is small enough for them to use now, is big enough for them to continue using, locks for safety and has the Boy Scout Logo which makes it a perfect keepsake. They will have these knives for the rest of their lives becase Case has the quality to endure the test of time. It was so much more than I could have hoped for.

Oilman, you gave me a chance to do something great AND you gave me a choice. For that I am eternally greatful. Thank You!

The terms of our agreement are more than fair....My boys will get their Knives in December and we will use them in January. I invite eveyone to check out the pictures of my boys with their knives when I proudly post them. God Bless you all.

I'm only glad I could help. You came to a weird place and I'd bet that there were a hundred other people here that would have helped, I just beat them to it. :) And I did the easy part, thank you Paula for taking the time to build our next members.

pjhull, just be careful with posting pics of other people's kids. especially their faces. maybe a picture of their sculpture and the knife.

PJ,

If you wonder what kind of community you have stumbled upon, click the flying VG emblem in my signature below. A guy with a signature of "Vampire Gerbil" entertained us for years with his wild character and humor. Then fate dealt him a very bad hand, his wife died and he had a stroke. We've been trying to keep track of him and help him since then. Tell your scouts about what it means to be a brother. Show them the link.

PS. Mary Beth made a most excellent choice for you.

Congrats pjhull - looks like you came to the right place! Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are part of the past of a lot of us here, so glad we could help.

Way to go Oilman!

I had actually already thought of that. Safety first....that's always the plan. But not to worry....I have a plan. Thanks so much for your concern though...It's very good advice.

To all... Jeff, Jude, Tyr....anyone else I may have missed, it is becoming obvious to me that you all have a family here. I am honored that you welcomed me. Thank you.

As an outsider looking in I would just like to offer the observation that what you have is very special. It makes me proud to know that there are still good people out there. God Bless.

PJ isnt it amazing what happens when "knife nuts" get together:)
