On Friday evening, I ran my first Cub Scout Pack Meeting as the Cubmaster. I had a buddy of mine (Matt in the horrible pics below) come out and do presentation on animal tracks and scat common to the Upstate NY area. Matt spends more nights in the woods than anybody I know and did a great job, kids love hearing a poop of any type! We are doing a wilderness skills topic in every Pack meeting from this point forward, lot of fun. I couldn't attach the Powepoint presentation as a file or pdf, but if anybody wants it, e-mail me at mneedham51@hotmail.com and shoot over a copy...

excellent. good to hear you are getting some info into the heads of the scouts, and teaching them some good wilderness info. also good for showing off to their pals...

when i was in scouts, all we did at the meetings was arts and crafts type stuff...i quickly got bored and dropped out and did my own thing in the woods.

This wednesday is our second knots night, it went better then I thought last week, we are in the middle of our outdoor survival training, it's a bit different up here, though.
I have firesteels for them and swiss army knives for the ones who pass knots.
I'll try to post pics after the class.

A gteat book on that subject is
"Mammal Tracking in North America"
by James Halfpenny.

Lots of color photos, sketches, and
discussion of tracks, gaits, and methods.

Siguy,

I was never actually a scout myself. I grew in area that was pretty rural and it would have been a hike to get to a scout program. What I have figured out is that the quality of the scouting experience is a function of the parents and leaders interest/ability. Hopefully, we will do a good job....

Liam,

Can't wait to see your pics, just make sure that they come out better than mine... Are you teaching at the den or pack level?

Russ A.

Thank you for the info, we will have to pick that up. Matt had brought some pamphlets from NYS and Maine, and showed us some plastic ID cards on a key ring that were pretty neat too. Thanks again!
